DRAFT

Materials of the last century shaped modern life, but at a price

Materials science studies the fundamentals of the macroscopic physical properties of materials and
applies them in various areas of science and engineering, ensuring that they can be used in
machines, tools, or products necessary for society. Many new materials were birthed from basic
curiosity and serendipity, but new techniques also made way for targeted innovation. However,
this area of knowledge has brought a lot of controversy in society, it is said that it has brought good
and bad effects.
The discovery of different materials has brought with it new and improved scientific tools. For
example, scientists can now see materials at a much finer scale thanks to the electron microscope
and other tools making individual atoms visible. . Materials can be designed from scratch to solve
specific problems.
Like everything in this life, materials science has a dark side; motivated by wartime demand,
chemists honed their craft with poison gas, explosives and propellants, new war weapons were
created. New materials also can bring with them environmental problems, by the mid-1960s,
researchers started noticing plastic pieces in the ocean. Today, plastic pollution is found virtually

be part of the solutions to these problems. I consider that the development of new materials is
essential for the development of humanity and the resolution of the problems of the present life
and the improvement of the future life.

this area of knowledge has brought a lot of controversy in society, it is said that it has brought good
and bad effects.
The discovery of different materials has brought with it new and improved scientific tools. For
example, scientists can now see materials at a much finer scale thanks to the electron microscope
and other tools making individual atoms visible. . Materials can be designed from scratch to solve
specific problems.
Like everything in this life, materials science has a dark side; motivated by wartime demand,

researchers started noticing plastic pieces in the ocean. Today, plastic pollution is found virtually

However people go about addressing the environmental problems, other new materials will likely
be part of the solutions to these problems. Due to this reason, I consider that the development of
new materials should go on because it is essential for the development of humanity and it could be
of greater help for the resolution of the problems of the present life and the improvement of the
future life.
