VICE - Refers to any immoral conduct or habit, the indulgence of which leads to depravity,

wickedness and corruption.


- As a social problem, vice control must be coordinated, the school system, the church, mass
media and civic groups who actively campaign for the suppression of vices in society.
- The community members as a whole must make an effort to attain moral education and
economic uplift through civic mindedness and voluntary participation.

ALCOHOLISM - A medical condition in which someone frequently drinks too much alcohol and
becomes unable to live a normal and healthy life.

TYPES OF DRINKERS:

 Occasional Drinker - Drink on special occasions or user's alcohol as a home remedy, takes only
a few drinks per year.
 Frequent Drinker - Drinks at parties and social affairs. Intake may be once a week or
occasionally reaches three to four times a week. Uses beverages to release inhibitions and
tension.
 Regular Drinker - May drink daily or consistently on weekends, usually comes from cultural
background where wine or beer is used with meals to enhance the flavor of the food.
 Alcohol Dependent - Drinkers to have a good time, excessive drinking occurs occasionally but
drinker may become alcoholic.
 Alcoholic - Has a lost control of his use of alcohol. Alcohol assumes primary goal in his/her life,
even to the exclusion of physical health health and interest of family and society in general.

DRUG ADDICTION - Is a state of mind which a person has lost the power of self-control in respect of a
drug.

CHARACTERISTICS OF A DRUG ADDICTION

 Uncontrollable Craving - The addict feels a compulsive craving to take drug repeatedly and
tries to procure the same bay any means.
 Tolerance - It is the tendency to increase the dose of the drug to produce the same effects as to
that of the original effect.
 Addiction - The addict is powerless to quit drug use.
 Physical Dependence - The addict psychological functioning is altered. The body becomes sick,
inactive and incapable of carrying out useful activity in the absence of the drug. The withdrawal
syndromes will occur once the drug use is stopped.
 Psychological Dependence - Emotional and mental discomfort exist to the individual. The drug
addict feels he cannot do without the drug, consequently if he does not take the drug his
mental process is affected.
 Withdrawal Syndrome - The addict becomes nervous and restless when he does not get the
drug after about 12 hours.
PROSTITUTION - An act or practice f a woman, man or child who indulges habitually or engages in
sexual
Intercourse for money or for profit. This is a vice which cause physical and moral suffering to
society. Although prostitution is illegal, there has been no effective method to curb and prevent
it.

There are several know causes of prostitution

 Poor social background.


 Personality handicaps of the prostitutes.
 Lack of Education
 Craving for money and luxury on the part of the prostitute.
 Social causes such as broken homes, anonymity of safety life and poverty.
 Lack of restraints from parents, social environment and laxity of social control such as the agency
for religious training and reforms.
 Influence of contraceptive readily available and preventative treatment for VD and STD.
 Some are victims of white slave trade such as those from flung areas.
 The lack of interest of law enforcement authorities in safeguarding the virtues and moral of
person who engage in the trade.
 Prostitution means is a means to maintain order addiction to vice such as gambling, alcoholism
and substance abuse.

GAMBLING - Illegal gambling is an evil that undermines the social, moral and economic growth of the
nation. It is
beyond the good morals which have the effect of causing poverty, dishonesty, fraud and deceit. It
has
lead men to neglect social obligation and the welfare of his trade as a source of income.
