I. INTRODUCTION
Agricultural materials are materials of plant- and animal origin that are processed into
food, feed, and agro-industrial products. These different agricultural materials or
resources play very important role in the lives of many Filipinos especially in the rural
areas where most of these resources are produced. These plant and animal-based
resources can be classified in many different ways. However, for the purpose of this
exercise, they are classified based on their origin, either terrestrial or aquatic, and
further categorized into either plant or animal.
Agricultural and Biosystems Engineers (ABEs) are very much involved in the production,
processing, and utilization of these resources, directly or indirectly. In production, ABEs
may be involved in designing appropriate production facilities and equipment or even
production technologies and techniques. During harvesting and postharvest operations,
ABEs are very much involved in the implementation of appropriate practices,
techniques, application of technologies, and even designing of appropriate processing
and storage facilities to preserve the best quality of the products before they reach the
consumers.
Each ABE has a moral obligation to help his locality improve its economy by applying
his profession. Among the many possibilities available is by providing technical
expertise in the production, processing, and utilization of locally produced agricultural-
based resources. However, before an ABE can do this, he/she should be first
knowledgeable of the locally available resources and the quantity produced for each
resource, the type of processed products, and prevalent problems associated with the
production and processing of the available resources, among others.
This laboratory exercise therefore, will give an initial glimpse of the available resources
in the student’s municipality or locality for him/her to plan strategies to help uplift the
economy in the area.
At the end of the laboratory exercise, the students should be able to:

III. METHODOLOGY
To create the list of the plant and animal resources available in the
municipality, survey and interview were done to the following farms; Javier Buffalo
Farm, Tony’s Farm, Abueva Piggery and Poultry Farm, Javier Wet Market, and
Atan’s Rice Field.
The student communicated to them first for approval and visited on site for
the interview, actual visualization, discussions, and documentations.
After getting the list, the resources will be classified into the following as appropriate:
A. Terrestrial Plants
I. Starch Plants
II. Sugar Plants
III. Oil Plants
IV. Protein Providing Plants
V. Vegetables
VI. Fruits
VII. Nuts
VIII. Beverage and Stimulants
IX. Spices
X. Medicinal Plants
XI. Essentials Oils

B. Domesticated Animals
ABEn 147. Laboratory Exercise No. 1
C. Aquatic Plants
D. Aquatic Animals
I. Marine Fish Species
II. Freshwater Aquaculture
III. Brackish Water Aquaculture
IV. Mariculture
The different agricultural resources or materials are processed locally either for food,
feed, and other industrial products. Document and list these processed products
available within the municipality. Present them under the four (4) major classification
as follows.
A. Terrestrial Plants
B. Domestic Animals
C. Aquatic Plants
D. Aquatic Animals
Present the results of your assessment in tabular form by listing each resource under the
appropriate major and sub-classifications as follows:
