I. INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study

Agriculture is the science and art of cultivating plants and livestock. Agriculture
was the key development in the rise of sedentary human civilization.

A farm is an area of land that is devoted primarily to agricultural processes with

the primary objective of producing crops; it is the basic facility in food production. Farming
originated independently in different parts of the world, as hunter gatherer societies transitioned
to food production rather that food capture.

Golden apple snail (Pomacea canaliculata) is a specie of large freshwater snail

with gills and an operculum, an aquatic gastropod mollusk in the family Ampullariidae, the apple
snails. South American in origin, this species is considered to be in the top 100 of the “World’s
Worst Invasive Alien Species”. It is also considered as about 40th the worst alien species in
Europe and the worst alien species of gastropod in Europe.

The Golden Apple Snail (Pomacea canaliculata) was introduced in the

Philippines between 1982 and 1984 to supplement sources of food protein of low-income
Filipino farmers. However in 1986, it began to heavily damage rice farms in Northwestern part
of Luzon. Its rapid reproduction and wide distribution threaten rice production and food security
in the country.

According to the experts of website www.knowledgebank.irri.org, the critical

time to manage golden apple snails is during land preparation and crop establishment or planting;
specifically, first 10 days after transplanting (DAT), and during the first 21 days after direct wet-
seeding. After this, the crop is generally resistant to snail damage and snails are actually
beneficial by feeding on weeds.
B. Review of Related Literature
Golden Apple snail were introduced in Asia from South America in the 1980 as
potential food for people, but it is now known to carry rat lungworms and a few diseases.
Today it is the common enemy of rice farmers.

Black Nightshade is a common garden weed, sometimes used for medicinal

purposes. Its fruits are only edible when fully ripe but toxic when unripe because of the
presence of the toxin solanine. Its leaves have been said to be composed with phosphorus
and a bit of potassium making it suitable as a bio fertilizer formula.

Caffeine, the world’s most widely consumed phytoactive drug. A susceptible

molluscicidal agent and prevents the onset of drowsiness induced by adenosine.

C. Statement of the Objective

This research aims the following:
1. To help local farmers nurture their plants; and
2. Eradicate the Golden Apple Snail

D. Statement of the problem

Specifically, this research seeks to answer the following questions:
1. Is the combination of Bio-fertilizer and the Bio-molluscicide possible?
2. What is the best method that can be used in creating an effictive molluscicide?

E. Statement of the Hypothesis

Null Hypothesis – The combination of liquid bio-organic fertilizer and molluscicide is
not as effective as commercial ones.
Alternative Hypothesis – The combination of liquid bio-organic fertilizer and
molluscicide is e
F. Significance of the Study
The study will generate useful information on creating a pesticide that can fertilize a
plant. Specifically, it will be useful to everyone specially to our local farmers who are
suffering because of Golden Apple Snail.

G. Scope and Limitations

The conduct of the study will concentrate only on the following:
1. Create an effective Bio-fertilizer that can help farmers to nurture their plants
2. Create an effective Bio-molluscicide that can eliminate Golden Apple snails at a small
amount of time

H. Definition of Terms
1. Golden Apple Snail – Also known as “Golden Kuhol”. Become a serious problem
for farmers because it eats plants and crops in these days in the Philippines.
2. Liquid bio-organic fertilizer – liquid fertilizer that contains organic plant nutrients
extracted through fermenting animal/plant materials.
3. Bio Molluscicide – an agent eradicating mollusks containing organic material.
4. Solanine- a glycoalkaloid poison found in species of the nightshade family within the
genus Solanum, such as the potato, the tomato, and the eggplant.
5. Adenosine- a chemical that can be found in many living systems and medications.
II. METHODOLOGY

A. Research Environment
The research will be conducted at Saint Mary’s University Junior High school and
Science High school laboratory.

C. Materials
Parameters to be used:
1. Banana peelings
2. Black Night shade leaves
3. Golden Apple snail
4. Ground Coffee
5. Pechay seeds
6. Spray container

D. Methods

Step by step procedure

Preparing the Pechay Plant
1. Prepare the four elongated pots
2. Put the soil in each pot
3. Plot 8-10 seeds into each pot and sprinkle a bit of water
Making the Fertilizer
Chop one kilo of banana peelings and place inside the clay jar and mix with one kilo of
crude sugar or moscovado. Cover the jar with a clean sheet of paper (manila paper) and
tie with string. Finally store the jar in a cool and shaded area and leave it for at least 7
days for the fermentation process
Making the Molluscicide
Take the Black Nightshade leaves and fruits and wash it carefully, ground the two
materials into fine particles using a blender separately, take each material and mix with
250 ml of distilled water and shake separately. After placing the extracts into the
containers store them in a freezer
