MDW and MDWH Miniature

Circuit Breakers

GUARANTEED
PROTECTION FOR THE
ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION

The MDW and MDWH mini circuit breaker line offers protection against overload and short circuit in
electric conductors, complying with the tripping characteristic curves B, C, and D, according to standards
IEC 60898 and IEC 60947-2. Developed to be used in low voltage circuits with direct or alternating current
from 2 to 125 A, the line has a short-circuit breaking capacity up to 15 kA (127/220 V ac), according to
standard IEC 60947-2. The miniature circuit breakers have a trip free mechanism, which makes the trip
independent from the handle, and circuit breaker status indication.

Tripping Characteristic Curves 60

g Curve B
The main characteristic of the miniature circuit-breaker of
Minutes

curve B is the instantaneous trip for currents from 3 to 5 times

above the rated current. Therefore, they are applied mainly in
Tripping time

the protection of circuits with resistive characteristics or with

great cable lengths. 20

g Curve C
Seconds

The characteristic of the miniature circuit-breaker of curve C is 4

the instantaneous trip for currents from 5 to 10 times above 2

the rated current. Therefore, they are used for the protection
of circuits with installation of inductive loads.
0.04
g Curve D
The characteristic of the miniature circuit-breaker of curve D is
the instantaneous trip for currents from 10 to 20. Therefore,
they are used for the protection of higly inductive loads who
present a high starting current peak during the starting time, 0.02

like big electric motors, electric transformers, etc. 0.01

Adjustment Factors for Maximum Allowable Current for Miniature Circuit

Breaker
The sizing of miniature circuit breakers must be optimized to provide safety and avoid untimely tripping, like premature thermal
tripping. In continuous operation, the characteristics of the installation place, such as altitude, ambient temperature and
surrounding devices, directly influence the characteristics of the thermal tripping.
To avoid undue tripping, the following sizing factors must be taken into account to determine the new rated current of
miniature circuit breakers:
J Sizing factor for altitude
J Sizing factor for ambient temperature
J Sizing factor for the influence of surrounding devices (grouping)

Altitude Factor
Environments located more than 2,000 meters above sea level have low atmospheric pressure. The lower the atmospheric
pressure, the lower the thermal dissipation of the heat generated by the miniature circuit breaker. To compensate for this
effect, the following factors must be applied when sizing the product rated current.

Altitude (m) ≤ 2,000 ≤ 3,000 ≤ 4,000 ≤ 5,000

Sizing of the miniature circuit breaker Multiplication factor of the miniature

Ambient Temperature Factor for the Place Where the Miniature Circuit Breaker Will Be Installed

WEG miniature circuit breakers are calibrated to operate at an ambient temperature of 30 °C. The following table shows the
withstand current according to the ambient temperature.
When installed inside any enclosure, the temperature inside the enclosure with all surrounding devices connected must be
considered as ambient temperature, since the dissipated power of the surrounding devices influences the temperature rise
inside the enclosure.
In miniature circuit breakers, the following sizing factors must be applied when sizing the product current.

Device Grouping Factor

When 2 or more miniature circuit breakers are mounted side by side and operate simultaneously, the thermal dissipation of
these devices is reduced. In this case, the grouping factor 0.8 must be used to multiply the rated current of the miniature
circuit breakers.

Constant Long-Duration Loads

In applications where the rated load will be constantly switched on for periods over one hour, such as solar generation and
electric vehicle charging stations, the use of WEG MDWH miniature circuit breakers is recommended.

Switch-Disconnectors - SIW

SAFE DISCONNECTION
IN YOUR ELECTRICAL
INSTALLATIONS
The SIW switch-disconnectors have the same frames as the MDW miniature circuit breakers in the two,
three and four-pole versions, but they do not have thermal and magnetic releases, that is, they do not
have tripping characteristic curves. Their function is to disconnect electrical circuits with currents up to
100 A. The SIW switch-disconnectors also feature auxiliary contact blocks and padlock supplied
as accessories.

Notes: 1) The connection to the MEB or PE bar depends on where exactly the surge protectors will be installed and how the MEB is actually implemented. Therefore, the connection
will be to the MEB when:
- The MEB is located upstream the main distribution board (with the MEB located, as it should be, in the immediate surroundings of the input point of the power line in the
building), and the surge protectors are installed onto the MEB and not on the board; or
- The surge protectors are installed on the main distribution board of the building, and the PE bar of the board accumulates the MEB function. As a result, the connection will
be done to the PE bar itself when the surge protectors are installed on the distribution board, and the PE bar of the board does not accumulate the MEB function.
2) The hypothesis configures a scheme that enters TN-C and the installation continues TN-C, or that enters TN-C and then turns into TN-S. The input neutral, necessarily PEN,
must be grounded to the MEB direct or indirectly. The passage from the TN-C to TN-S scheme, with the separation of the incoming PEN conductor into neutral conductor
and PE conductor, would be done on the main distribution board (globally, the scheme is TN-C-S).
3) The hypothesis configures three possible grounding schemes: TT (with neutral), IT with neutral and line that enters the building already in TN-S scheme.
4) T
here are situations in which one of the two schemes becomes mandatory, like in the case mentioned in item b of 6.3.5.2.6 (ABNT NBR 5410:2004).

Additional Protection Needed for the SPW Surge Protector Line
It is necessary to use additional protection when the SPW installation busbar has a short circuit level above 5 kA. For those
cases, the additional protection must be provided by means of one of the following alternatives:
J For surge protectors up to 20 kA, use MDW Curve C 25 A circuit breakers or 25 A fuses

J For surge protectors up to 60 kA, use MDW Curve C 50 A circuit breakers or 63 A fuses

J The additional protection must be installed upstream, in series with the SPW

Appendix 1: Association of Circuit Breakers - Cascading

Cascading or backup protection is the association of two circuit breakers in series for protection against short circuit and
overload, as shown in Figure 1. Normally, the device located on the supply/feeding side (C2) performs the protection, and it
can trip with or without the help of the device located on the load side (C1) Such association ensures the performance of the
circuit protection without causing excessive stress and/or wear to the protection devices. In this kind of configuration, the
output or load circuit breaker (C1) may have a short-circuit breaking capacity smaller than the short-circuit current rms value
(Icp) of the power supply that feeds this circuit. The income circuit-breaker (C2) or both can trip when a short circuit occurs in
the system they protect. This kind of association allows reducing the breaking capacity Icu of the output circuit breaker (C1),
making this association cheaper.

According to NBR IEC 60947-2 / Annex A, all the arrangements that have cascading characteristics are normally tested so as
to ensure the aforementioned performance. The following tables contain the possible association of circuit breakers as a
function of the system rated voltage and prospective short-circuit current. These tables indicate the maximum short-circuit
breaking capacity (Icu) that the income (C2-supply) and output (C1-load) circuit breaker association withstands.

The breaking capacities reinforced by cascading indicated in the tables are valid for output circuit breakers (C1) with 1P,
1P + N, 2P, 3P or 4P.

The association described above is not restricted to two consecutive circuit breakers, but to all the circuit breakers installed
downstream from the income circuit-breaker (C2).

We are not necessarily limited to using the circuit breakers combined in the same switchboard. They may belong to different
switchboards/panels.

Icc

Icc = Rated conditional short-circuit current (rms)

Icu ≥ Icc

Icu1 < Icc Icu2 < Icc Icu = Final short-circuit breaking capacity of the device
