MODULE 1: THE SELF VARIOUS PERSPECTIVES

Task 1
Directions: Choose a specific perspective from a philosopher that you can relate to
and in a graphic organizer, describe yourself vis-à-vis your chosen philosophical
perspective. After which, write a brief explanations of your work.

Sigmund Freud’s concept of self is divided into three parts: conscious, preconscious,
and unconscious. According to him, although the conscious level play an important
role in our lives, it is the unconscious self that dominates in our personalities. In my
point view, conscious self is what’s seen from the outside or the present goals of
people had in mind. It is literally the behavior of a person that can easily be noticed by
anyone without knowing the person in the first place. The preconscious self are the
shared memories of a person with his/her loved ones, while the stored knowledge is
the learned lessons in schools, values and good practices a person encountered. These
serves as a motivation to fulfill one’s dreams and goals in life. The unconscious self is
where the weaknesses, disadvantages, and some hidden personalities lies. Knowing
your weaknesses is an important aspect a person should be aware. We can turn these
disadvantages of ours into our inspiration to strive hard to overcome those
weaknesses. Id is the primitive and instinctual part of the mind, the superego operates
the moral conscience while the ego is the realistic part that mediates between the
desires of the id and the superego.
