LESSON 2: SOCIOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVES

REFLECTION

Every family is a primary social unit in society. A family is composed of adults, at

least two of whom live in a sexual relationship that is socially approved, and offspring
or adopted children. As basic and essential building blocks of societies, families have
a crucial role in social development. They bear the primary responsibility for the
education and socialization of children and the instilling values of citizenship and
belonging in the society. The influence of family on children at a young age is
essential in shaping their personality and identity.

Good family background is one thing that we could consider to some that have a good
and positive behavior of each member of that particular family. In my situation, I can
acknowledge my family as a complete and had a good family background in terms of
having a harmonious relationship. The influences of my family in my development as
an individual define me into what I am today. My family plays an important role in
shaping our behaviors and personality since we were younger. They set a good
example for us to be guided in what we are supposed to do as their child. We are
taught to be respectful, god-fearing, and kind in dealing with other people. These were
the basic values we learned before enter schooling. Families are not the only factor
affecting the development of an individual in many aspects. Outside our family there
is society which can also affect one’s development because of the difference in
environment. There were instance in my life where I study in a boarding school
exclusive for girls for five years, everything is free not only education but also shelter,
food and even our clothes. I barely communicate with my family because of the rules
and regulations of the school. This kind of environment is new for me especially
without the presence of my family. Nevertheless, this environment taught me to
become independent, a student who can stand on her own without depending on
others. I learned how to conquer my problems and challenges in life because of the
guidance of the sisters/nuns that took good care of us. They taught us the value of
Christ in our life through the subject, Catechism. I became more aware of my own
weaknesses and learned to overcome those. I’m very grateful to have entered into this
kind of environment that make a good changes.

Despite of many changes in me, there is an aspect in myself that I would want to
change. I am aware of my weaknesses but having a low self-esteem is what I’d like to
overcome. I’m having a hard time to communicate in front of the public because all
the attentions are on me and that I’m conscious on what to deliver or say. I’m looking
forward on the change of myself regarding this matter in a new environment I am
facing.
