EFFECTS OF ALTERNATIVE LIGHT IN THE GROWTH OF AN OKRA SEED (ABELMOSCHUS ESCULENTUS)

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study

The sun is known as the source of light and life. It also plays a big role on the life cycle
of the living things. According to Greg Volente, Finding enough sunlight for plants to grow
positively can be difficult especially when the weather is bad or there is a lack of natural lighting
in your home. He also said that we can use artificial as well, but is it effective? But first of all,
why do plants need sunlight to grow? The process of photosynthesis includes, sunlight, water,
carbon dioxide, and minerals. The energy in the sun’s light rays provides a big help for the
growth of the plants. Heat is a type of energy wherein plants use this energy to grow, they use
this as food instead of eating like people do. The sun provides energy through light radiation
which helps plants to convert carbon dioxide into glucose which is how they grow.

Statement of the problem

This study determine the effects of artificial light in the growth of the plant (okra seed)
And does artificial light can replace the sunlight.

Questions that will be answered by this study;

1. Which is more effective, natural light or artificial light?

2. Similarities of natural and artificial light.

Hypothesis
Null hypothesis
Artificial light can’t help to the growth of plants.

Alternative Hypothesis
Artificial light can help to the growth of plants.

Significance of the study

There are times where the weather is too cold and the nutrients that the plants need is not
provided because of the absence of the sun. This study would prove that the artificial light can
also offer or give the nutrients that the plants need. The lack of sunlight in the process of
photosynthesis is a big loss for the growth of the plants. Another way to grow a plant without
sunlight, is to use artificial light or the light that come from flashlights.

Scope and Limitation

The focus of this study is to discover whether an alternative light can help or support the
growth of the okra seed (abelmoschus esculentus) or not, and this research will be done if there
are already leaves on the plant with an artificial light or is it taller than the outcome of the plant
that has been exposed to the natural light or the plant that doesn’t have any of the lights. Also,

these examinations can prove if there are any chances that humans would be able to use artificial
lights as a source of heat and nutrients for the plants.

Experimental Design
This experiment was made to find out whether the use of an artificial light would have a
positive or negative effect on the growth of plants such as an okra plant. Some think that there is
a chance that in the future it would be difficult to access natural light from the sun since they
think that the sun will disappear in the near future.
There are 3 experimental plants which are the plant 1 (p1), plant 2 (p2) and the plant 3
(p3), all these shall be watered fairly with 1 cup a day in a recycled plastic bottle with 5 inch
deep soil until they bloom leaves. But the only difference is p1 will be exposed to the natural
light, p2 will be exposed to the alternative light and the p3 would not be exposed on both of the
given lights. And this is what the study about, to identify which plant will grow faster.

Material
Flashlight
Sunlight
3 Okra plants
4 Recycled plastic bottles (6 inches tall)
Measuring cup
Ruler (inches)
