Visioning Before Strategizing

As the HR Manager for a small grocery store named “Hunger!” our company vision is to

provide our community with fresh organics foods at a reasonable price. My job is to come up a

vision for compensating the staff. There are a total of 25 employees who work at this grocery

store in the small community of the town Nisswa, Minnesota. There are two managers who work

opposite weeks from each other. Each manager is none exempt and is paid a salary of $30,000 a

year not including bonus and commission. The company has a number of 13 full time employees

and 10 part-time employees. These positions are exempt and the pay is $9.50 an hour not

including overtime and bonuses. Since this is a small grocery store there are only four positions

to fill which are cashier, floor stocker, backroom stocker, and greeter/deli worker. We hope to

have a customer base that is mainly our community and tourist who come to visit. We provide

local and organic foods at an affordable price.

As a small grocery store, “Hungry!” believes that a business can’t not survive without its

employees. Our culture is based on diversity. Everyone is family and should be treated as such.

Remember “The customer is always right” and this should be followed. The following guide

points are made based off the company’s vision and culture. All employees are to work their

scheduled days any full timers work a forty-hour work week and our part-timers work 16- 25-

hour work weeks. Any additional days over 40 hours will include time and a half. Holidays such

as Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Easter are time and a half all other holidays are regular pay.

Annual bonuses will be given to employees who work hard and show improvement throughout

the year. Fulltime employees are given paid vacation, health benefits, dental and vision. Our

company prides family. All fulltime employees are given a life insurance policy. This vision is a

strategic vision, by paying our employees minimum wage or a set salary we are able spend more

money on employee benefits that we believe will keep our employees working for the company.
If the economy was to decline, we will make sure our employees are taken care of and still have

a job within the company.

Innovator, cost cutter and customer focused are all three business strategies we want to

align our company with. As a grocery store our products don’t have a long shelf life so have to

think of innovative ways to get rid of products and bring in new products and foods as well. Our

response should be to use sales, offer coupons, and promote daily items of the week. Cost cutter

is another business strategy we want to align with our company with. Food cost fluctuates

depending on demand and suppliers. We need to be able to cut cost so we break even every time.

Some weeks it might be the same items other weeks it might be different items. Whatever the

case cutting cost ids priority and should be valued as such. Lastly, we are customer driven. Our

company is dedicated to our customers we want to provide them with the best products. Their

expectations of our company are important to use and want to generate feedback from each

customer so that we can be the best. That’s why annual customer appreciate day is key to

showing our customers that they are important to our business.

In Minnesota there is a medium for cashiers at $10.63 and counter/retail clerks at $12.32.

These companies are paying their employees more. However, we want to make sure that we can

be able to provide for our employees and keep them happy throughout the year. Our employees

won’t be receiving the same as other companies that work in sales but we will provide our

employees with incentive such as commission and bonuses in which they can earn more money.

“We are sensitive to the needs of all employees and to the communities in which we operate

(Milkovich, Newman& Gerhart, 2016, pg.47)”. “We want to attract, motivate, and retain the best

talent in our industry (Milkovich, Newman& Gerhart, 2016, pg.47)”. This is why we offer

bonuses annual and commission based the customer purchase of our credit cards and extra saving
value cards. “We will never lose sight of our strategic vision which in returns creates brand

leadership ad superior customer experience (Milkovich, Newman& Gerhart, 2016, pg.47)”.
