ABSTRACT (ENGLISH)
An Olympic Twenty20 presence would also be certain to enhance the global popularity of cricket among girls and
young women, encouraging not least my twin daughters’ lofty ambitions of emulating Ellyse Perry, Charlotte
Edwards and the 1900 Olympic gold medal winners.

FULL TEXT
Sir, Murad Ahmed’s Big Read “Cricket goes for gold” (April 28) was
well-directed and refreshing; one notes that for the Financial Times, at least, “Mr Pietersen” is the correct mode of
address for the former England captain, rather than “KP”. However, one factor in the debate concerning potential
Olympic Twenty20 tournaments was not addressed, although it should certainly be considered by the Board of
Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the English Cricket Board (ECB) and the International Cricket Council (ICC).
If cricket is embraced by the International Olympic Committee, federations associated and affiliated to the ICC,
such as Norway, Belgium and even Luxembourg, will at last be able to gain access to government funding which is
ringfenced for national Olympic preparation and participation. This money, while apparently small in comparison to
other sports’ quotas, would be considerable in relation to that currently received from the ICC. Effectively there
would be a transfer payment to cricket that would particularly benefit the subcontinental diaspora in continental
Europe by crowding much more investment into the game at no marginal expense to the BCCI, ECB and ICC. While
not closing the gap completely with rugby or hockey, cricket at the lower end of the international spectrum would
experience a step-change in resources after a difficult decade in terms of both financial and competitive
structures.
Can concerned readers please urge the BCCI, the ECB and the
ICC to support the overdue and much-needed reconnection of cricket with the Olympic movement?
