Introduction to Esports: Task 2 – Structure.

In this research task you will explore how esports is organized and structured
in the UK. 

Students must fill out each box below to the expected minimum word count, all research
sources should be link at the bottom of each box, Wikipedia does not count as a research
source. Source links do not make up total word count of a question box.

What role does the government play?

The UK government currently has limited involvement with esports however it seems that they
are increasing their involvement and support for the industry. On the government website it said
this about esports. “Esports has the potential to develop as an area of real national strength in the
UK, building on our world-class video games, entertainment, and sports sectors. The steep growth
in online esports audience figures and the increasing number of esports events and investments in
the UK indicate the existence of a solid foundation to build on.” They also said they would “ bring
forward plans for a ministerial roundtable with a range of esports stakeholders and that they are
open to discuss “ how to encourage best practice in areas such as player well-being and esports
integrity.

How is esports defined under UK law?

In the UK Esports is put in the same category as chess and bridge and is classified as a “mind game” not a sport

There is currently no dedicated law or regime relevant to esports in the UK. And most of the regulation is left up to third
parties to apply their own “common rules and regulations”

 What role do the British Esports Association play?

In their statement they say that they want to promote esports In the UK, increase its level of awareness and improve
standards within esports.
They are a non-profit national body wanting to expand and improve all aspects of esports in the UK.
They want to “not push esports as a rival to traditional sport, but as a credible activity in its own right”

They work with schools and colleges to embrace and get involved with esports with things such as the British Esports
Championships which supports the setup of clubs and other initiatives.

How does esports fit within the wider video game industry?

Esports has changed the way games are released and developed, many gamnes that are competitive based will be
constantly updated and “balanced” to keep the game fair and modern many game developers are opting to take this
route when they release their games and this is even moving over into singleplayer games such as “Final Fantasy XV
awhich is getting patches now: Square Enix has confirmed that it will decrease the difficulty of the game’s much-
maligned Chapter 13 by granting additional powers”
“Internet content delivery systems make these kinds of patches possible — but their role in esports titles have popularized
them”

Builds community by having LAN events where everyone gets involved in games live and in person.

What tournaments take place in the UK?

Commonwealth Esports Championships was staged in Birmingham alongside the Mainstream Commonwealth games
featuring athletes from all over the commonwealth. Also had a medal awards system.

British Esports Students Champs – The grand finals will be held at Nottingham trent university.
