Introduction to Esports: Task 2 – Structure.

In this research task you will explore how esports is organized and structured
in the UK.

Students must fill out each box below to the expected minimum word count, all research
sources should be link at the bottom of each box, Wikipedia does not count as a research
source. Source links do not make up total word count of a question box.

What role does the government play?

Although E-sports in the UK isn’t officially recognised as a sport (unlike many other countries ), the government has
talked positively about E-sports as they responded to the “department for digital, culture, media and sports DCMS report
in 2020” the British government officially stated “E-sports has the potential to develop as an area of real national
strength in the UK “ so potentially some time in the near future we may see the British government invest money and
time into the E-sports industry as it’s an exponentially growing sport worldwide, another reason we may see E-sports
investments in the near future is that the government has already invested funding into the gaming industry even if not
directly E-sports related it’s a step in the right direction.

How is esports defined under UK law?

In the UK E-sports isn’t recognised as a sport its treated more similarly to games like chess or bridge, however many
other countries around the globe do classify E-sports as a sport and hold it to a very high regard so potentially in the
near future we could see the UK classify the E-sports industry as a sport and treat it as such.

What role do the British Esports Association play?

British E-sports is a not-for-profit national body constructed in 2016 to actively promote the UK E-sports industry, there
goal as a company is to raise awareness for E-sports as an industry, to improve the standards and to inspire the future
talents of E-sports. Ultimately their goal is to “support E-sports, provide expertise and advice”.

In addition, they provide top quality amateur tournaments for upcoming E-sports professionals.

 How does esports fit within the wider video game industry?

The rise of E-sports has had major impact on the gaming industry in many different ways, popularity being one of the
main factors E-sports has contributed to as for countless different games for example VALORANT, Overwatch and many
others, millions of people will tune in live or watch a VOD of the best of the best battling it out in a high stakes
tournament, it really brings a lot of different people supporting different teams together to watch there favourite
streamers or teams battle for victory.

E-sports also affects things like revenue, since the rise of the industry game companies and gamers alike have had
opportunities to make a living playing their favourite game.

It has affected even the way game designers make their games for most online games they will build systems like
spectator mode to specifically cater to the esports scene.

What tournaments take place in the UK?

to list a few tournaments that take place here in the UK we have the VALORANT TOUR ESL premiership, common wealth
E-sports championship Gfinity, EPIC.LAN insomnia, Epremier league 20 League of legends world championship along with
many others.

E-sports as a whole is taken to a much higher regard among other countries such as USA so it’s no surprise that the
selection of tournament events that take place here in the UK aren’t on as large a scale as other countries.
