Introduction to Esports: Task 2 – Structure.

In this research task you will explore how esports is organized and structured
in the UK.

Students must fill out each box below to the expected minimum word count, all research
sources should be link at the bottom of each box, Wikipedia does not count as a research

What role does the government play?


In the UK, the Government does not play a major role in Esports in the UK. Whilst the
government backs esports and recognises it’s appeal, strength and potential but so far
hasn’t done anything major for the sector though many call for it to do so. One of the
things the government did was in 2016 where it created a non profit association called the
british esports association to help spread awareness and represent esports players and
provide education of the sector. The association work with the department for culture,
media and sport to ensure they achieve these goals

How is esports defined under UK law?


Under UK law, Esports is considered gaming like chess and bridge rather than a sport.
With the UKVI confirming they “do not consider computer gaming to be a sport”. Whether
this will be changed is not currently known however with the industry growing bigger each
year it may change. Currently in the UK alone the industry is worth 1.5 billion as of 2020
and the interest of the sector growing in popularity each some may call for change soon.

What role do the British Esports Association play?


The Association is a non-profit body created by the UK government. It’s role is to promote
the industry of esports and increase the standards of it in the UK whilst inspiring future
talent whilst increasing the awareness of the sector. The creation of the esports
association allows the freedom to focus on ‘grassroot’ level talent with the help of
governing education body Pearson they offer BTEC qualifications around the country to
inspire these people.

How does esports fit within the wider video game industry?
Esports allow skilled video gamers to compete for money doing what they love and what
they are good at. Esports also will also help shift the current stigma around gaming and
instead of seeing it as a hobby it will popularise the whole gaming industry and in whole
creating a community that is more supportive and serious about gaming.

What tournaments take place in the UK?


Esports tournaments are varied and different all year round. This is due to the different
game’s players compete in. Esports games usually fall into categories such as first-person
shooters or real time strategy just to name a few. Games in these popular genres have
their own tournament usually annually and some of these games include; Rocket League,
League of Legends and Valorant. With some of these events being organized or sponsored
by the creators of these games. Some of the games that will be having tournaments in
2023 are; Apex Legends, League of Legends, Dota 2, Valorant and Pokemon
