Introduction to Esports: Task 2 – Structure.

In this research task you will explore how esports is organized and structured
in the UK. 

Students must fill out each box below to the expected minimum word count, all research
sources should be link at the bottom of each box, Wikipedia does not count as a research
source. Source links do not make up total word count of a question box.

What role does the government play?

As a first step, the government will bring forward plans for a ministerial roundtable with a range of esports
stakeholders to discuss the opportunities and barriers to market driven growth in the UK and how industry is working
collectively or can work in future

How is esports defined under UK law?

eSports most commonly take the form of organised, multi-player video game competitions, particularly between
professional players. The most common video game genres in eSports are real-time strategy, fighting, first-person
shooter (FPS), and multi-player online battle arena (MOBA).

What role do the British Esports Association play?

British Esports is a not for profit national body established in 2016 to promote esports in the UK, increase its level of
awareness, improve standards. British Esports aim to increase its level of awareness, improve standards, and inspire
future talent.
How does esports fit within the wider video game industry?

Esports is a booming global industry where skilled video gamers play competitively. In the same way that traditional
sports have competitions in baseball, basketball, and football, esports encompasses competitions across a variety of
video games. Globally, the total esports audience will grow to 495.0 million people in 2020, a year- on-year growth of
+11.7%.

What tournaments take place in the UK?

Current Tournaments (There are two or three tournaments each month around the UK, typically organised by local
clubs and quite often just one-day events)

British Go Congress (This is a regular, large tournament of 6 rounds with a number of side events running in parallel
with the main games)

London Open (The London Open is the UK's premier international event taking place over four days just after the
Christmas celebrations at the London Go Centre)

British Championship (The contest for the British Championship starts with the six-round Candidates' tournament,
normally held on the weekend of the first May Bank Holiday. Players who have attained a rating of 2.0 kyu or above
in the previous year may qualify to compete for the championship)

Pair Go (Pair Go is the mixed doubles of the Go world, invented in Japan promote playing by women. They hold an
annual championship every year; a unique and highly social event held within the spirit of Pair Go)

Trophies (In addition various clubs award trophies for the local tournament. Each trophy is engraved with the
winners' names and usually kept for one year by the winner)

Grand Prix (The top players in each event compete for points in the Stacey Grand Prix. Double Digit Kyu play in their
own DDK Grand Prix where points are scored for playing a tournament and winning games. Junior players compete
aswell)
Team Events (is most common video game genres associated with esports are multiplayer online battle arena
(MOBA), first-person shooter (FPS), fighting, card, battle royale and real-time strategy (RTS) games)

Your lecturer will inform you of how to hand in on Moodle ready for the work to be
checked, this will also need to be uploaded to the Unit 1 page on your WIX website.
