In this research task you will explore how esports is organized and structured
in the UK.

What role does the government play?

The government plays a huge role in the Esports industry, the government is what is ensuring its steady growth. The
government also is beginning to recognise the esports area as a professional industry. A big issue in which the
government can help in is international competitions, as there are still countries in the world hat do not recognize
esports and so work visas become essential. The government can really be a massive asset in ensuring that esports
receives the exposure it deserves and can continue to develop further.

How is esports defined under UK law?

esports is currently classified as a game in the UK, it is still currently in the same pool as things like chess, as both of
these are seen as a game and not yet a sport. Esports is obviously a lucrative and growing market throughout the UK
and the general exposure and popularity of esports is on the rise too. One of the reasons in which Esports is not yet
classified as a sport is because there is still an ongoing discussion with the UK Gambling Commission. In the future it is
very likely that Esports will too be defined as a sport and no longer just a game.

What role do the British Esports Association play?

They play a massive role just like the government in the exposure and development of esports as the British Esports
Association are a non-profit association that solemnly focus on the promotion of esport and its overall awareness. They
were established in 2016 and what they do is help to run and fund events related to esports and give talks about what is
around different places such as schools. Another great thing that they do is help secure visas for people so that they can
participate in international events.

 How does esports fit within the wider video game industry?

Esports fits in nicely within the video game industry as esports is not so focused on just one game, but it is so diverse and
unique that there are esports categories for games such as VALORANT and Mario Kart which are completely different
yet they still have exposure to esports. Overall esports allows video games to have a more competitive form of exposure
allowing both industries to get much bigger. Another positive about the esports industry for the video games industry is
that games receive patches and updates more regularly due to more exposure to various issues

What tournaments take place in the UK?

There are a range of esports tournaments that do take place in the UK, some of these include, ESL’s National
Championship, Epic.LAN, Insomnia, London Games Festival, Lol Mid-Season Invitational, Dota 2 ESL One Birmingham
and Apex Legends Global Series. Some of these even take place this year, such mas the Apex Legends Global Series. One
of the more iconic one is, Rocket League World Championship 2018, this took place in London.
