Chapter 2

METHODOLOGY

Shown in the chapter are the discussions on the research design, the

procedure in conducting and identifying the respondents, the instrument used,

and the statistical tools employed.

Research Design

This study employs a descriptive research design which generalizes or

draws inference to the population from the sample results. A descriptive research

design provides a quantitative or numeric description of trends, attitudes, or

opinions of a population by studying a sample of that population (Creswell, 2009).

This idea is supported by Farooq (2015) who defined descriptive research as an

extensive cross sectional approach, where a number of cases are considered at a

particular time and the data is gathered to study the opinions, behaviour, attitudes,

habits, desires, values and beliefs etc.

Educational problems are dealt through descriptive surveys by which they

are identified and then means and measures are introduced to solve these

problems (Farooq, 2015).

Research Locale

The research study will be conducted in one of the private school in Davao

city. The institution is composed of eight different departments; the College of

Business Administration, College of Education; College of Criminal Justice

Education; College of Nursing; College of Engineering, College of Hospitality

Management, College of Information Technology and the Senior High School

Department. The SHS Department has four strands which are the Science,

Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), Technical-Vocational (Tech-

Voc), General Academic Strand (GAS), and the Accountancy and Business

Management Strand (ABM).

Population and Sample

The respondents of the study will be grade 12 STEM Students wherein the

sampling technique utilized will be Stratified Random Sampling Technique. Twenty

seven (27) male students will be taken as respondents of the study and twenty

three (23) female students a total of 50 respondents. The study will be conducted

during the first semester of the academic year 2021-2022.

Research Instrument

The researchers utilized a modified survey questionnaire containing

knowledge regarding the subject matter, stress management skills of students on

physiological stress, emotional stress, and academic stress.

Research participants were asked to rate their level of agreement or

disagreement with the given statements using the 5-point Likert scale with the

following descriptive equivalent: 5- always; 4- sometimes; 3- seldom; 2-rarely; and

1- never.

The rating scales for statistical analysis are as follows:

Parameter Limit Descriptive Level Interpretation

4.20 – 5.00 Very High This means that the stress

management skills among grade
12 STEM students are always
evident.

3.40 – 4.19 High This means that the stress

management skills among grade
12 STEM students are sometimes
evident.

2.60 – 3.39 Moderate This means that the stress

management skills among grade
12 STEM students are seldom
evident.

1.80 – 2.59 Low This means that the stress

management skills among grade
12 STEM students are rarely
evident.

1.00 – 1.79 Very Low This means that the stress

management skills among grade
12 STEM students are never
evident.

Data Collection

The researchers requested permission from the Principal of the Senior High

School Department to conduct the study. Upon the approval of the principal, the

researcher administered the survey electronically through Google Forms to ensure

the safety of respondents due to the pandemic. The research subjects were

instructed on the use of the questionnaires as the basis for gathering information.

After the questionnaires were retrieved, the data were collated and tallied. The
data were analyzed and interpreted comprehensively and results, conclusions,

and recommendations were formed.

Statistical Tools

The data were treated using the following statistical tools:

Mean. This was used to determine the level of stress management skills

among grade 12 STEM students.

T-test. This was used to determine the significant difference on the level of

stress management skills among grade 12 STEM students when analyzed by sex.
