Learning Competency:
Define a circle.
Objective:
1. Give the standard form of an equation of a circle.
2. Identify the radius and center of the given equation of a circle.
Overview:
We now visit a familiar shape ever since kindergarten: the circle. A circle is the locus
of all points in the plane having the same fixed positive distance, called the radius, from a
fixed point, called the center.
The equation of a circle in Standard Form is given by:
(𝑥 − ℎ)2 + (𝑦 − 𝑘)2 = 𝑟 2
where r is the radius, and (h,k) is the center of the circle.
Note: For the following exercises and test, provide one whole sheet of paper for your
answers.
Exercise A.
Find the equation of the circle in standard form in the following conditions:
1. General form 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 + 10𝑥 − 2𝑦 = 55
2. Center is at C(2,-5) and radius is 3
3. Center at (-10,0) and passes through (-6,3)
4. Center at the origin and radius 5
5. Center at (-4,6) and is tangent to the x-axis
Exercise B.
Given the equation, identify the center and radius of the circle.
1. (𝑥 − 4)2 + (𝑦 − 2)2 = 9
2. (𝑥 + 1)2 + 𝑦 2 = 25
3. 𝑥 2 − 4𝑥 + 𝑦 2 − 4𝑦 − 8 = 0
4. 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 − 14𝑥 + 12𝑦 = 3
5. 9𝑥 2 + 9𝑦 2 − 6𝑥 + 24𝑦 = 19
Test Yourself
