explain the author’s thought about greatness;
appreciate the importance of literature text in finding greatness in others; and write an essay about someone they know who exemplifies greatness in his/her own special way. II. Procedures Preliminary Task 1- Methinks! (see page 119): Let the students ponder on Shakespeare’s thoughts about greatness. Encourage them to write their answers in their notebook. Call out some students to share their answers in class. A. Activity Group the students and let them do Task 2 Connecting Lives (see page 119). In their group, let the students create a dialogue in three different communicative styles with the same situation, and present it in class. B. Analysis What is the degree of formality in each conversation? How does our relationship with others influence the way we communicate with them? Of the people who influenced you, how do you show an appreciation of their greatness? C. Abstraction Discussion of the literature text, Auld Lang Syne by Robert Burns D. Application Questions to Answer (see page 121) 1. When is Auld Lang Syne usually sung? 2. Who is being referred to in the song? 3. What makes the persona’s friend unforgettable? 4. What experiences have they gone through? 5. Why do people love to sing this during New Year’s celebration? V. Assessment Prompt the students to think of someone they remember after reading Auld Lang Syne. In a one whole sheet of paper, instruct them to write an essay about that person on how he/she exemplifies greatness in his/her own special way. VI. Assignment Let the students read in advance and analyze the poem I Think Continually of Those Who were Truly Great by Stephen Spender and answer the questions on page 122.
