I. Objectives
At the end of this lesson the students will be able to :
1. Summarize and apply reading strategies by completing a journal entry after
reading a selection independently.
2. Read a poem correctly and clearly with expressions and identify variety of poetic
elements by answering questions in groups.
3. Define new vocabulary words by completing quadrants.
II. Subject Matter
“Strategies for Reading Poetry”
Reference/s: English for Life (Module) pages 2-23, Because I could not stop for
Death by Emily Dickinson
Material/s: Visual Aids, Flashcards, Module, Printed Activities
Values: Develop a genuine love for reading
III. Procedure
A. Preparation
1. Prayer
2. Room Conditioning
3. Checking of Attendance
4. Motivation
B. Lesson Proper
1. Introduce the topic by means of asking them what they know about
poetry.
2. Present a vocabulary using flashcards with the following words:
a. Poetry
b. Poem
c. Strategy
d. Pre-reading
e. Post- reading
f. Visualizing
g. Values
3. Define each term om the vocabulary flashcards.
4. Present poems for them to read orally
5. Discuss the strategies for reading poetry and try to differentiate and
compare the given strategies.
C. Activities
1. Have students read the poem of Robin Klein, Thank you letter
silently for 20 minutes.
2. After reading, give students 5 min. to respond in their journals.
Tell them to write what is their opinion about it, their
understanding and interpretation of the given poem. You may have
one of the students set the timer for both activities for 25 minutes.
D. Wrap- up
• Give every student a copy of the poem Because I could not stop for
death by Emily Dickinson. Have them read it twice silently. Go over
some of the words they may not know, such as, haste, civility,
Gossamer, tippet, tulle. Have students read it again and discuss the
meaning as a class.
Once students have a basic understanding of the meaning, have them
get in their usual groups and answer the questions. The group setting is
to discuss the questions and analyze the poem. However, they each have
to have their own piece of paper with their answers. They may use a
dictionary and use all their notes on poetry.
