Introductory Message
Welcome to English10!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts

of the Schools Division of Guimaras and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western
Visayas through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division
(CLMD). This is developed to guide the learning facilitators (teachers,
parents and responsible adults) in helping the learners meet the standards
set by the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials

aimed to guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace
and time using the contextualized resources in the community. This will
also assist the learners in acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge
and attitudes for productivity and employment.

For learning facilitator:

The English 10 Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the leaching-learning
activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC) with
minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and learner. This will be made
available to the learners with the references/links to ease the independent learning.

For the learner:

The English 10 Activity Sheet is developed to help you continue learning

even if you are not in school. This learning material provides you with meaningful
and engaging activities for independent learning. Being an active learner, carefully
read and understand the instructions then perform the activities and answer the
assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator on the agreed schedule.

Expanded Definition of Words

I. Learning Competency with Code

Expanded definition of words (EN10V-IIIa-13.9)

II. Background Information for Learners

In this age of mass communication, people often know us only
by the words we use--- make sure you know the right words!

Communication is vital to society, be it in the field of

education, the business sphere, or in interpersonal relations. As
Grade 10 students you are tasked to present reports, research or
concept papers and other linguistic presentations where your skills in
communication is a major requirement.

In fact, one of the first things to do when you are presenting

something technical to an audience, may it be oral or written form is
to discuss the unfamiliar terms clearly, to avoid confusions and
misunderstandings and to deliver clearer meanings.

Thus, giving accurate expanded or extended definition is one of

the most important skills students must have in order to
communicate effectively.

Ready to know more about them, here’s what’s in store for you
today!

In this age of mass communication, people often know us only by the

Definition gives a concise but exact meanings to unfamiliar words and
special meanings to familiar words. It is a useful technique in presenting
technical subjects. A technical writer or speaker should define the terms
with multiple meanings and those that are unfamiliar to the readers. The
term must be given special meaning within the report or presentation. The
definition depends on how complex is the unfamiliar term.

Example:

Instead of calling a concussion an “injury” or “botulism” a “medical

term”, call them something more specific like “serious head injury” and a
“severe form of food poisoning” in order to present a simpler and clearer
meaning to the target audience. Its main purpose is to clarify and explain
concepts, ideas, and issues by answering the question, “What does it
mean?

So then, what is an expanded definition?

What is expanded definition of words?

Expanded Definition is one or more words, phrases, sentences or

paragraphs that attempt to explain a complex term. It can also be personal
but limited to the facts only. It explains what the words mean to the writer
and may allow a reader to see the words differently.

In writing or giving reports, researches, concept paper and other

presentations, writers need to explain certain terms prior to the discussion
of the main subject matter in order to present clearer and meaningful
meanings. Some terms are probably so important in the report that there
may be so much confusion about them when they are beyond the grasp of
the majority’s vocabulary. In this case, expanded discussion is necessary to
ensure the accurate delivery of appropriate meanings.

Moreover, the first and most convenient thing to do when giving an

expanded definition is to compose the formal sentence definition of the
term one is writing about. Then, the term should be placed at the beginning
because this helps one establish the focus for the rest of the discussion.
However; a writer may make use of informal definition in order to help
readers understand the words’ denotation (literal) meaning as well as
connotation (associated) meaning.

Types of Expanded Definitions

1. Standard/Formal Sentence Definition

- a brief, explicit, precise and objective dictionary meaning of the term,
consisting of the following:

a. The term (word or phrase) to be defined

b. The class of object or concept to which the term belongs.
c. The differentiating characteristics that distinguish it from all others.

Examples:

•Water (term) is a liquid (class) made up of molecules of hydrogen

and oxygen in ratio of 2 to 1 (differentiating characteristics).

•Astronomy (term) is a branch of scientific study (class) primarily

Concerned with celestial objects inside and outside of the earth’s
atmosphere (differentiating characteristics)
2. Informal Sentence Definition
- This one uses known words or examples to explain an unknown
term. These definitions may be synonyms or antonyms introduced
by or, in other words, or like. It could also be an analogy or
illustration.

Example:

Freedom, also referred to as liberty or independence, is a state people

reach when they are free to think and do whatever they please.

(To understand ways on how to expand definition of words please read

WORD POWER” on page 376.Copy and Fill in the table with the correct

expanding them.)

Activity 2

How to compose sentences with expanded definitions?

In order to present clearer and accurate meanings, the writer must define
terms which are unfamiliar to the readers/audience. This is where expanded
definition takes place. Its main objective is to explain key terms according to what
it is meant in the context of the presentation, so that readers may be able to see
the word differently. Further, details that will help readers understand the words in
its literal meaning as well as in its connotation (associated) meanings will be
appropriately presented. Take a look at the example on the next page.
