- Hi grade 6, today we have a special guest with us, her name is Mrs. Bright and she will be
observing me teach you
- For today’s class, we will be playing some traditional indigenous games from a variety of
cultures in the community
- In Aborignal culture, there are many traditional games that are played in the tribes
throughout all ages
- These traditional games focus less on winning and more on valuing a fair play attitude
- The values reflected in these games are: respecting the rules, respecting your competitors,
using courage and skill, being humble when you win, challenging yourself to do better,
and honoring the person who gave you the best challenge
- In these games, there is sometimes equipment, the equipment is typically made from
natural, material from the land
- Most of the games we will play today are from the Blackfoot nation
- Indigenous people many years ago used their imagination to make-up games for those
same reasons, to have fun and learn skills as well as improve hunting, survival skills and
learn social values
- For all games today I will number you into 2 groups and you will stay in these groups for
all games

Body (30 mins.):

The first game we will play is called Run and Scream

Run and Scream - 5 minutes

- Traditionally completed by going one at a time to teach patience

- Used to practise good lung capacity as a skill for life
- In this game we will use blackfoot marking sticks, these are willow sticks decorated with
beads and feathers
- Mrs. Tarnava was kind enough to lend us her sticks from her grade 1 class
- We need to treat these sticks with respect

*number students into 2 groups and hand out scream sticks

- Once you have your number and stick please go stand on the black line on the far
side of the gym

Rules

- Students will stand on the black line on one end of the gym
- Each student will hold a marking stick
- In order of the students on the line, the student will take a big breath of air and start to run
while screaming
Georgia Merk

- When they can no longer scream without taking a new breath, they must mark in the gym
where they stopped with the marking stick and stand and wait
- Students will do a practise run, on my GO they will run and scream and mark where they
got to in the gym

- Do one group at a time and repeat 2x to see if students can beat their first attempt
- Collect scream sticks

Stealing Rocks - 10 minutes

- For our next game we will be playing stealing rocks

- This game is similar to capture the flag and it created by the Stó:lō people who are from
BC and are known as the people of the river
- It teaches dodging and weaving

Rules

- Give out pinnies to team 1 and team 2

- Put a pile of “rocks” at each end of the gym in a hula hoop
- The objective of the game is to cross over the center line and steal one rock at a time
without getting tagged, where the rocks are is a safety zone and if you obtain a rock you
are safe
- If you are tagged you must start a human chain holding elbows from the safety line
towards the center line
- Players can free a teammate or get a rock
- Players can save other teammates from the human chain on a safe walk
-
- Okay can I please have 3 volunteers collect equipment and help put it away

Line Tag

- The third game is called Line Tag

- Line Tag was a game that was supposed to help focus on cooperation and encouragement
while also working on the strength of the chasers in order to keep the line together.
- All players should be holding hands/locking arms. The purpose of this game is for the first
person in line to try and tag the last person in line. Everyone in the line is trying to help the
first person.
- If the line breaks then the last person goes to the front and turns into the tagger. Every time
the last person is tagged then they become the tagger. The last person wants to try and
avoid being tagged the longest.

Closure ( 2 min.):
- Everyone else please line up quietly at the door
- Great class today! I hope you enjoyed getting to play some different cultural games
- Next class will be scooter games
