Assignment Title: Variable Valve Timing

Back Ground:
Definition:
The Variable Valve Timing system optimizes the timing of opening and closing the valves
for multiple engine speeds.
The first-generation VVT design uses two-step variation which optimises the engine for two
different engine speeds. This design enables two different set of timings which includes one
for the ‘part-load’ condition up to 3500 rpm and other for the ‘full-load’ condition, above
3500 rpm. In addition, VVT more often improves performance and reduces emissions. It also
provides smooth idling at low rpm and maximum power at high rpm.

Benefits of Variable Valve Timing:

Those Benefits are, below are the top 4 Benefits of having a variable valve timing engine.

Better RPM Strength: The main advantage of having a variable valve timing technology is
the increase it will provide in your engine’s revolutions per minute. When you step on the gas
pedal to accelerate the vehicle faster, it will require more RPMS to sustain this demand. The
variable valve timing has a lot to do with making this happen. That roaring sound you hear
when you step on the gas pedal is the variable valve timing system hard at work to keep your
engine running strong.

Better Fuel Economy: Engine efficiency has a lot to do with the timing of the exhaust valve
and intake valve. If these valves can be managed and timed properly from the variable valve
timing technology, then the engine will be able to produce the same power without needing
so much fuel. If your engine doesn’t require as much fuel, then you will see your gas mileage
increase. This means fewer trips to the gas station and more money saved on fuel costs.

Lower Carbon Emissions: Any time your engine provides a better fuel economy, you will
see reduced carbon emissions too. Variable valve timing technology does not get enough
credit for its eco-friendly nature.

Types of Variable Valve Timing:

a) Cam-Changing VVT

b) Cam-Phasing VVT

c) Cam-Changing + Cam-Phasing VVT

d) Rover's unique VVC system
