5.0 RESPONSIBILITIES
5.1 The Project Manager is responsible for implementation of this procedure.
5.2 The HSE manager is responsible for monitoring implementation of this procedure.
5.3 The HSE department is responsible for training project personnel on precautions to be taken
during a lightning storm as stipulated in this procedure.

6.0 GENERAL INFORMATION ON LIGHTNING

6.1 Lightning is an electrical discharge accompanied by thunder that commonly occurs during a
thunderstorm. The discharge may take place within a cloud (intra-cloud), between clouds (inter-
cloud), or between a cloud and the earth (nearly 75% of most lightning discharges occur be-
tween clouds and earth).
6.2 Lightning occurs as charges of positive and negative polarity build up in the atmosphere
during a thunderstorm. The result is a sudden electric discharge or current between a cloud and

the earth. As the downward electrical charge from the cloud nears the earth's surface, positive
charges from the earth rise to meet it. As the negative charge from the cloud is drawn toward
the earth in an effort to discharge its energy, its path is erratic. As it nears the earth, positive
charges are attracted by the clouds negative charges through high locations such as roof edges,
lighting poles, antennas, etc. When the two opposing charges meet they create a closed circuit
and the path to the ground is completed resulting in a flash of lightning.
6.3 A lightning strike to an unprotected building can be catastrophic. Packing up to 100 million
volts of electricity and a force comparable to that of a small nuclear reactor, lightning has the
power to rip through roofs, explode walls of brick or concrete and ignite deadly fires. In addition
to structural damage, lightning surges through power lines can cause wire damage and destruc-
tion of valuable electronic equipment such as computers, televisions, stereos, security systems,
etc. In addition, any person that is struck directly by lightning or near a lightning strike can be
killed or seriously injured instantly by the electric charge or the compression (pressure) that re-
sults from the lightning bolt. A single strike in an area where many workers are working in close
proximity could result in multiple fatalities and serious injuries.
6.4 A lightning rod protection system attempts to provide a designated path for the lightning cur-
rent to travel. The system neither attracts nor repels a lightning strike, but simply attempts to
intercept and guide the current harmlessly to ground. A lightning rod protection system is made
up of several components.
6.4.1 Air terminals (lightning rods) are inconspicuous slender rods installed on building roofs,
towers, vessels, etc. at regular intervals recommended by industry standards.
6.4.2 Conductors are aluminum or copper cables that connect the air terminals (lightning rods)
and other system components.
6.4.3 Ground terminations are metal rods driven into the earth to guide the lightning current
harmlessly to the ground.
6.4.4 Surge arrestors and suppressors are devices that are installed in conjunction with a light-
ning rod protection system to protect electrical wiring and electronic systems and equipment.
6.5 LIGHTNING FACTS
6.5.1 A single bolt carries between 35,000 to 40,000 amperes of current.
6.5.2 A single bolt can generate temperatures as high as 50,000 degrees Celsius.
6.5.3 Lightning strikes somewhere on the earth every second.

6.5.4 Lightning can and does strike the same place more than once.
6.5.5 Lightning causes billions of dollars in property damage each year often resulting in fire and
total property loss.

7.0 PROCEDURE
7.1 Continuously monitor weather conditions by listening to weather forecasts, especially in the
early morning hours. The use of lightning detection and early warning systems is also recom-
mended.
7.2 Always keep any lightning rod protection system activated at all times.
7.3 Work should be stopped immediately if the danger of lightning activity and strikes exists in
order to protect employees.
7.4 Designated safe areas for employees should be established at work locations that are sus-
ceptible to frequent thunderstorms and associated lightning strikes.
7.5 When any lightning strike is observed or any lightning detection device activates, stop work
and seek shelter immediately, preferably in a designated safe location at the work site! If you're
unable to find shelter in a building or residence that is equipped with a lightning rod protection
system, then follow the following safety guidelines:
7.5.1 Indoors
7.5.1.1 Stand clear from windows, doors and electrical appliances.
7.5.1.2 Unplug appliances well before a storm nears - never during.
7.5.1.3 Avoid contact with piping including sinks, baths and faucets.
7.5.1.4 Do not use the telephone or any other telecommunication device except for emergen-
cies.
7.5.2 Outdoors
7.5.2.1 Look for a shelter equipped with a lightning rod protection system.
7.5.2.2 If you're caught outside and unprotected:
7.5.2.2.1 Avoid wide open areas.
7.5.2.2.2 Avoid proximity (minimum of 4.5m / 15 ft.) to other people. Spread out and don’t stand
in a crowd.
7.5.2.2.3 Get in a hard topped car if possible.
7.5.2.2.4 Never use a tree as a shelter.
7.5.2.2.5 Avoid areas that are higher than the surrounding landscape.

7.5.2.2.6 Keep away from metal objects including fencing, machinery, etc.
7.5.2.2.7 Avoid standing near tall objects.
7.5.2.2.8 Immediately get out of and away from pools, lakes, and other bodies of water.
7.5.2.2.9 If you feel a tingling sensation or your hair stands on end, lightning may be about to
strike! Immediately crouch down and cover your ears. Do not lie down or place your hands on
the ground.
7.5.2.2.10 Suspend all activities for at least 30 minutes from the last observed lightning strike or
sound of thunder before resuming activities.
7.6 Victims of a lightning strike should be administered CPR if necessary and provided immedi-
ate medical attention.
