PAGE 67. (MEAN)

EXERCISE #1.

The sizes of pants sold during one business day in a department store are 32, 38, 34, 42, 36, 34,
40, 44, 32, 34. Find the average size of the pants sold.

SOLUTION:

Add the sizes to determine the total size of pants that has been sold.

a) 32 + 38 + 34 + 42 + 36 + 34 + 40 + 44 + 32 + 34 = 366

Divide the total by the number of sizes.

(b) (Mn = sum of the values / the number of values) formula

c) Mn = 366 / 10

d) Mn = 36.6

e) The average size of the pants sold is 36.6

EXERCISE #2.

Given the frequency distribution for the weights of 50 pieces of luggage. Compute the mean.

SOLUTION:

In solving for the mean, given the grouped data or frequency distribution, we have to add
two columns for classmark (Xm) and fXm, that is…

WEIGHT NUMBER OF Xm fXm

(kilograms) PIECES (f)
7-9 2 8 16
10-12 8 11 88
13-15 14 14 196
16-18 19 17 323
19-21 7 20 140
N 50 763

a) (Mn = ∑fXm / N) formula

b) Mn = 763 / 50 = 15.26

c) The mean is 15.26.

PAGE 69. (MEDIAN)

EXERCISE #1.

The ages of 10 Administrators in a certain college are given as follows: Compute the
median.

40, 38, 45, 51, 44, 53, 59, 45, 56, 45

SOLUTION:

Arranging the ages in ascending order.

a) 38, 40, 44, 45, 45, 45, 51, 53, 56, 59

b) N = 10

c) (Md = (N + 1) / 2) formula

d) Md = (10 + 1) / 2

e) Md = 11 / 2 = 5.5th score, that is between the 5th and 6th scores.

f) Md = (45 + 45) / 2
g) 90 / 2 = 45

h) The median is 45.

EXERCISE #2.

Compute the median given the following data:

SOLUTION:

In computing the median of the grouped data, determine the median class which contains
the (N/2)th score under <cf of the cumulative frequency distribution.

SCORES IN f lb <cf
STATISTICS
75-79 6 74.5 60
70-74 7 69.5 54
65-69 2 64.5 47
60-64 8 59.5 45
55-59 12 = fm 54.5 = lb 37 = median class
50-54 7 49.5 25 = cfb
45-49 10 44.5 18
40-44 8 39.5 8
N 60

a) (Md = Xlb plus (N / 2 – cfb) / fm) i) formula

b) Md = 54.5 + (60 / 2 – 25 over 12) 5

c) Md = 54.5 + (30 – 25 over 12) 5

d) Md = 54.5 + (5 over 12) 5

e) Md = 54.5 + 25 over 12 = 54. 5 + 2.0833…

f) Md = 54.5 + 2.0833 = 56.5833… or 57

g) The median is 57.

PAGE 71. (MODE)

EXERCISE #1.

Find the mode in the following data.

1 5 6 9 11 15 17

2 5 7 9 12 15 17

3 5 7 9 12 15 18

4 6 8 12 10 16 18

4 6 9 12 11 16 18

SOLUTION:

Arrange it in order to find the mode.

a) 1

4 4

5 5 5

6 6 6

7 7

9 9 9 9

10
11 11

12 12 12 12

15 15 15

16 16

17 17

18 18 18

b) By inspection, the mode are 9 and 12 since they have the largest frequency which appears four
times.

PAGE 72. (MODE)

EXERCISE #2.

Solve for the mode, given the frequency distribution:

SOLUTION:

50-54 7 49.5 25 = cfb
45-49 10 44.5 18
40-44 8 39.5 8
N 60

a) (Mo = Xlb = (df1 / (df1 + df2) x i) formula

b) Xlb = 54. 5

c) df1 = 12 – 8 = 4

d) df2 = 12 -7 = 5

e) i = 59.5 – 54.5 = 5

f) Mo = 54.5 + (4 / (4 + 5) x 5

g) Mo = 54.5 + 20 / 9 = 54.5 + 2.22…

h) Mo = 56.72 or 57

i) The mode is 57.
