PRESENTATION
HISTORICAL EVENT
AND CONTEXT
•Andres Bonifacio and his colleagues founded a Philippine revolution and
organization known as Katipunan, or KKK, with the primary goal of gaining
independence from Spain through a revolution.
•The Katipunan was a secret organization until it was discovered in 1896, sparking
the Philippine Revolution, now known as the First Cry or Cry of Balintawak.
•The Cry of Balintawak was an event that marked the beginning of the Filipinos' first
staging act of revolution. The "cry" refers to the first clash between the Katipuneros,
who demonstrate their reform by tearing up their cedulas, implying that they have
declared their refusal to be enslaved and served by Spaniards.
•Patriotic chants such as "Viva La Filipina Independencia“
The chants of "Viva la Independencia Filipina" (Long Live Independence) expressed

• Teodoro Kalaw - Historian Teodoro Kalaw wrote in his 1925 book entitled The Filipino Revolution that
the Cry took place during the final week of August 1896 at Kangkong, Balintawak.
• Gregorio Zaide- stated in his books in 1954 that the "Cry" happened in Balintawak on August 26, 1896.
• Teodoro Agoncillo- For his 1956 book The Revolt of the Masses Teodoro Agoncillo defined "the Cry" as
the tearing of cedulas, departing from precedent. His version was based on the later testimonies of
Pío Valenzuela and others who claimed the cry took place in Pugad Lawin instead of Balintawak.
• Milagros Guerrero, Emmanuel Encarnacion and Ramon Villegas- their accounts claim that the event
to have taken place in Tandang Sora's barn in Gulod, Barangay Banlat, Quezon City.
• (NHCP)).- It was determined that the First Cry of the Philippine Revolution of 1896 took place on August
23, 1896, at Pugad Lawin (Project 8 in Quezon City today). The official date and location were largely
based on the account of Dr. Pio, a Katipunan official and friend of Andres Bonifacio who was present
at the event.

FINAL
RESOLUTION
Although NHCP identified that the first cry happened on August
23, 1896, in Pugad Lawin based on Pio Valenzuela's account, we
concluded, however, after doing further research, that the
credible accounts of eyewitnesses are Guillermo Masangkay and
Don Vicente Samson, who witnessed the Balintawak Cry on
August 26, 1896, as evidenced by their testimonies, implying that
their versions are detailed and accurate. Similarly, the presented
date and location were accepted by the early years of the
American government.
