 CAUSES AND PROCEDURES TO TACKLE FLOODING IN UYO
Flooding is one of the major environmental crises that keep recurring every year in the city of
uyo. Although flooding is not a natural phenomenon caused by antecedents, such as melting
of the icebergs, hurricanes ,overfilling of the major rivers but mostly flooding are caused by
human activity. The aim of this review is to evaluate the causes and procedures in uyo, IBB
in particular. Flood is observed as an excess of won land that is normally dry and in a
situation where inundation is caused by high flow or overflow of water in an established
water course, such as a river, stream, or drainage ditch. A flood strikes the city of uyo IBB
precisely anytime without warning ,when a large volume of rain falls within a short time in
uyo metropolis causing a heavy flooding at IBB way. The major cause of the flooding in the
IBB way is mostly poor drainage system within the town of uyo .The city is well structured
but when it comes to drainage system its nothing to write home about as the water way are
being blocked by waste bins .This particular action can be observed along mechanic village
(Abak road), each time it rains the road is normally flooded down to state secretariat because
of poor drainage system and blockage in water ways. This debris from mechanic village
which is not properly disposed is being dumped in water ways causing blockage and
hindrance to flow of water when it rains. This flooding caused from mechanic village due to
hindrances in water ways are then being rushed state secretariat.

Secondly the flooding being experienced at IBB way is also as a result of poor drainage
system .if look closely to this Ibb road it has no water ways and water from other area of
town is then being rushed down at Ibb way by NEPA office. Uyo Metropolis is also
experienced to suffer tiny water which results to over flow of water to the major road during
raining season. Sand and other unwanted substances are also the major cause 0f blockage in
water ways within uyo metropolis. With these point one could say that the major problem of
flooding within the town is lack water way discharge away from the town to rivers or
lake .Being that the amount or volume of water circulated around the town during the rain is
still with the town which causes the flood. If drainage system or water ways could be channel
in to rivers or lake the volume of water within the town most have reduced not to cause flood

PROCEDURE TO TACKLE FLOODING WITHIN THE CITY OF UYO

Adequate drainage system should be constructed around the town with filter to avoid dirt
falling into the water ways which will eventually block the water ways .Government should
adopt the use of water in to agriculture or crop and other beverages as the ensure availability
of food all year round .With this location also be built to used it in power generation (power
plant) known as turbine .Flood water could be useful to use in many ways if government
could manage properly. As experience in uyo metropolis creation of sizeable water ways
around the town and channelling them to discharge in to river will reduce the rate of flood
around the town. Underground drainage system is also another good system of controlling
flood around the town .So it could be suggested that at ibb way, there should be an
underground drainage system to control the flood with in state secretariat, IBB, ATIKU to
reduce it to its minimal.
