FILIPINO VALUE SYSTEM
CONTEXT:
The Filipino value system is outlined by the method of individuals living their family as an
associate influence of one’ culture. It refers to the set of values or the value system that a
majority of the Filipinos have traditionally commanded as necessary in their lives. The
Filipino value system includes their own distinctive collection of consistent ideologies,
ethical codes, moral practices, etiquette, and cultural and personal values that are inspired
by their society. Filipinos affirm the importance of values related to society, such as love of
country, honesty and integrity. As for personal values, self worth, life and purpose,
resilience and happiness are important. The Filipino value system arises from our culture
or approach of life, our distinctive way of turning into humans in this specific place and
time. We have a tendency to speak of Filipino values in an exceedingly fourfold sense.
First, while humanity shares universal human values, it is evident that certain values take
on a distinctly Filipino flavor for us. Secondly, after we speak of Filipino values, we don’t
mean that components of those Filipino values are absent within the value systems of
alternative peoples and cultures. All humans eat, communicate and sing, however they eat
specific foods, talk numerous languages and sing distinct songs. A Filipino value or disvalue
does now no longer exist alone, in isolation or in a vacuum. Filipino values like bahala na,
utang na loob, hiya, pakikisama, pakiusap are clustered around core values like social
acceptance, financial security, social mobility, and are continually discovered in a specific
context or set of circumstances. Bahala na, utang na loob & respect to others make a
Filipino an individual with precise ethical duty to deal with each other ensuing to network
ties. These values make Filipinos friendly, hospitable, polite & loyal. In brief, the Filipino
middle values impact how they behave in any situation.
In business ethics some Filipino values were used. Even in business we use or we make
values that can help us to deal with our business and people. We filipino have a high
respect for one’s parents, elders, or ancestors. We want to intact a relationship on work in a
company. We need values when we deal with business so that our relationship to our
future “suki” will grow and also the business. In brief, the Filipino core values influence
how they behave in any situation. The Philippines is recognized in having “collectivist”
culture indicated by close family ties and community ties in society. Filipino values are
centred at preserving social harmony, motivated mainly by the desire to be accepted within
a group. This makes a Filipino a reliable person that can easily integrate and work with
anyone, anytime, anyhow & anywhere. We, as Filipinos we’ve got the excellent trends
withinside the world. We aren’t best however we’ve got the excellent traits and features
that everybody ought to be proud of. Thus, allow us to admire the reality that those values
must be carried out to our society to have a great capacity in terms of working for our
human upliftment and to our countrywide betterment. As with any society though, the
values that a personal holds sacred will disagree on the idea of religion, upbringing other
factors. As a general description, the distinct value system of Filipinos is nonmoving
primarily in personal alliance systems, particularly those based mostly in kinship,
obligation, friendship, religion, and business relationships.
EXPERIENCE:
This topic is not hard for me. Though when I go deeper into this topic I feel that it is
somehow hard and not easy to understand . I already know our values but in this lesson I
have a chance to look back and understand what it is really meant. We know that values are
very important for us. And that we valued it the most. This lesson is very meaningful for
me because I learned a lot and understand more better. I think my topic is really suited for
me. I always feel indebted to someone and that I should work hard to pay it off someday
because one of our values is to have “utang na loob” but because of this lesson I learned
that in business, feeling obligated to someone can have a bad effect. I already experienced
some of the Filipino values in this lesson and I can say that some of these values can be
good or bad. Like “utang na loob” and “bahala na”. Even if I haven’t had a business I think I
know what are the assets of starting a new business. Through this lesson I have an
experience about the values in business. Starting a business is really hard but if you apply
these values in your business I think the business will have essence. I choose this topic
because I know that someday in the future I can use these values.
Modern Filipino values serve as their guide not only on their overall performance in
rendering direct affected person care. They additionally delivered that it’s miles critical to
be fueled with the aid of using modern Filipino values due to the fact as a person it serves
as one’s reflection of personality. Values make human beings determine what’s best. The
most successful Filipino entrepreneurs have wonderful leadership skills. He’s able to
convert and influence his workers and his customers positively. He’s additionally able to
innovate-to come back up with novel solutions once a difficult state of affairs arises. Value-
oriented. The most successful Filipino entrepreneurs have excellent leadership skills. He
can convince and positively influence his employees and customers. It is also able to
innovate to find new solutions when a challenging situation arises. Value-oriented. I found
out that Values replicate our sense of right and wrong. They assist us grow and develop.
Individual values replicate how we live our existence and what we consider essential for
our personal self-interests. Individual values consist of enthusiasm, creativity, humility and
private fulfillment. We, Filipinos, became friendly, outgoing, sensitive, slightly insulted,
stewed, sensitive, direct, hospitable, fighter, disrespectful, good, intelligent, ingenious,
greasy, happy, generous, slightly laughing, friendly, easy to be a friend. The term bahala na,
which can be translated to “whatever happens, happens”, is one of the more familiar
phrases used in the country. It is perhaps the most representative of how Filipinos value
adaptability and quick thinking. The expression exemplifies one’s belief in a higher power
and submitting one’s fate to elements that cannot be controlled.
People who use the term bahala na do not see anything wrong with it, as it serves as a sort
of positive affirmation that allows them to deal with a problem right then and there.
However, those who see it as a negative Filipino trait often view it as a form of fatalistic
submission or a way to absolve one from the responsibility of their actions. Managing
people generally is not easy. To get the best out of a workforce, you have to invest heavily
in the environment, and processes to ensure that you are providing adequate nurturing for
their skills and career.
REFLECTION:
The Filipino Value System is very useful in business. I realize that Reciprocity (utang na
loob) can be good or bad in business. We always feel obliged to someone and it is our
nature to pay it back. The essence of Utang na Loob is a commitment to adequately repay a
person who has done you a favor. A deeply personal inner dimension. This internal
dimension, loob, distinguishes utang na loob from ordinary debt (“utang”); As an internal
phenomenon, Utang na Loob goes well beyond ordinary debt or even the western concept
of owing a favor. And I realize that In Business, Utang na Loob can be good or bad for
business depending on many considerations, but it does impact the way business is
conducted, especially when the entrepreneur is faced with an ethical issue. The need for a
balance between generosity and reciprocity is brought to us through the person of the
protagonist, Ebenezer Scrooge. Scrooge’s business practices operate exactly within the law
of the land, and strictly adhere to the rule of reciprocity. He does nothing illegal nor does he
ask favors. Indeed, neither generosity nor friendship has roles to play in Scrooge’s world. I
lend you a sum of money and you pay me back with an agreed interest. Filial Piety. In
general, filial piety requires that children show love, respect, support, and reverence to
their parents and other elders in the family, such as grandparents or older siblings. To
recognize this eternal debt, children must respect and serve their parents throughout their
lives. Accept that the family values in the Confuzie-based jobs are strongly rooted, now we
can in depth the term that the daughter is gentle, and all that implies a sense of gratitude to
the figures of the parents and what I support. Serving your mother and father, supporting
them while they’re in need, and treating them with admiration are a few methods that filial
piety is manifested. Filial piety needs to additionally be exercised in love and obedience.
Outside the home, as well, filial piety is proven through striving now no longer to deliver
shame upon one’s mother and father or own circle of relatives' names. Padrino system. The
Padrino system taught me that sometimes our world is really unfair. It is because some
people get what they want easily without the need to work hard for it. For me everyone is
equal and each should do their best and prove that they're worth the thing or position they
have. In business you should still work hard and do your best because no matter if other
people get ahead of you just because of someone else's help, you know that you really
deserve better than those who are unfair. As we all know, politicians can be good
businessmen if they use their connections and resources properly. Philippine politics
provides opportunities for a good business. I realized that my course, which is Business
Management, is related to politics and governance in this manner. The “padrino” system of
our political environment gives advantages to business enthusiasts who have political
connections. This is the reason why having a business can also be dirty. Like politicians,
businessmen can also get dirty. Like politics, business gives power (financial and influential
power) and this power can corrupt the minds of businessmen. Businessmen can create all
kinds of tactics to gain profits. The Suki System taught me, we Filipinos have a lot of values
when it comes to business. And one of the values that I usually hear from adults is the “suki
system”. This suki system is one of the business owners' needs, because you know that
there is someone that will keep coming back to your store maybe every week or every
other day to buy your products. When a buyer and a vendor enter a suki arrangement, they
become each other’s suki. The purchaser can also expect to spend less time on the market
for the best quality commodity at the most affordable prices and can also expect unique
and personal care from suki to sum it up, there are many different ways of conducting
negotiations. There are many different ways of conducting negotiations. There are
techniques and concepts unique to those ways. And for me if you are vendor or a business
owner you should taking care of those purchaser because they are the one who help your
Bahala na in the business setting is that having this kind of value will help you to become
stronger in a way that you are telling yourselves that you are ready to deal with hard
situations. Like in the business, saying bahala na in a situation means that you believe in
yourself that you can face all the problems you might encounter. The bad side of Bahala na
in the business setting is that you are no longer preparing for things/ problems you might
encounter. In the business you shouldn’t be lazy in a way that you are just sitting pretty and
thinking what will happen. For example, if you are the business owner, you encounter a
financial crisis but instead of doing actions you intended to say bahala na. This action will
never help you solve your problems. This value “Bahala Na” taught me that in life, if you
want to be successful you need to take action. I also believe that you create your own
success in life. It is not all about depending on someone, if you want to achieve something
in life, go work hard for it. I remember when I was a kid I always says “bahala na” and with
that kind of attitude, at the end I always disappointed myself, telling myself that what if I
really did my best instead of saying “bahala na”. Sometimes in life we intend to just give up
immediately, not finding what solution might help us. With that I realized that your
decisions in life really matter. It’s not bad to offer everything to God, but God wants us
To learn that we should work hard for something that we want. We shouldn’t leave or
depend on Him. Amor Propio. This value can be a hindrance to the success of a business.
Having this value means you have a tension wire that grids you up and protects you from
criticism. Accepting criticism is important in business because you take those things as a
guide to make your business much better and if you have so much grid in yourself you will
not be able to accept these criticisms. This value can also result in displaying superficial
behavior or so-called “pakitang tao”. In business you can’t trick everyone, you have to be
naturally good, accepting and credible for others to accept you and your business. If anyone
wants to have his/her own business, having this value isn’t a great idea. Imagine, your
colleagues tell you something that will make your business even better, but instead of
taking it as an advice you take it as an insult because you feel like they step on your pride
so you end up messing up with your colleagues and that is very unethical. Amor propio has
a lot of good sides and bad sides. However, despite these sides. We need to balance our self-
love and love towards others, this way we cannot hurt other people also ourselves as well.
Amor propio has been circulating around the business industry and lot of people abuse this
trait, abusing this trait will lead selfishness’ reflection of amor propio is Filipinos have been
described as friendly, outgoing, sensitive, easily offended, nosy, garrulous, direct,
hospitable, feisty, irreverent, good natured, clever, witty, gregarious, happy, generous, easy
to laugh, gracious, easy to befriend, casual, fun loving, sensitive and hospitable. Personal
and family honor are stressed, as well as dignity and pride. Education is highly valued and
families make great sacrifices to educate their children. Hiya is instilled in Filipinos at an
early age. To be shamed is the greatest form of disgrace. Mañ ana Habit. Mañ ana habits
merely suggest that laying aside vital tasks for later associate degreed hurriedly creates it
to the last minute when the point draws closer. Filipinos are suffering from Mañ ana habit
at one time or another after they heighten what quantity of time they need to complete a
task or lessen however long it takes to complete it that forces them to work under pressure
ensuing to half-baked ideas and solutions. This habit shows our culture’s lack of sense in
time which is most true particularly to students. This is often a social drawback as a result
of most Filipinos are beneath an illusion that they are coping with vital pressing tasks
however understand within the finish that they’re simply wasting their time. This is often a
Filipino habit and a Filipino may simply verify procrastinators as a result of virtually
everybody in the society procrastinating that causes them to inadequately accomplish
productive work. Moreover, I’m a student who had a hard time resisting the temptation of
laying aside duties for tomorrow which leads me to come back up against stress, guilt, and
late submission of class work.

ACTION:
I’m learning and understanding the Filipino Value System by gathering some information
from people and on the internet. Our values are essential due to the fact they assist us to
grow and develop. They assist us to create the destiny we need to experience. Every person
is involved in making hundreds of selections each day. In the future this Filipino Value
System that I have learned will help me to become a better person and a better business
woman. I am still growing and developing and without these values I can’t continue having
a good life. I believe that all the learnings I learned in this topic will be the guide for me to
achieve the business I want. Some of the Filipino Value System is negative and I will choose
or reflect wisely in the terms of the value that I have learned. In taking action, I must be
aware. Being aware about our values and attitudes is vital as it enables us to: identify why
we’re doing what we’re doing. Identify what the outcomes of our movements may be for
ourselves or for the younger character or colleague. Bear in mind the other or higher
options. My values influence my decisions related to my relationships with others and
other activities I will engage in. I will take seriously the meaning of our values for me to be
able to maintain a good relationship with others and to myself. I must do all the positive
values that we have and unlearn the negative values.

EVALUATION:
This topic is very easy but some information is not found in our module so to learn and
understand more about the Filipino Value System, I gathered some information through
the internet and books that I have found in our house. I also ask questions that I am curious
about in this topic. I have learned in my actions that gathering different information will
help me to better understand the topic and I can find answers to what I am curious about.
Filipino Value facilitates me in taking proper choices in hard situations thus enhancing my
decision-making abilities. It inculcates me with vital values like kindness, compassion and
empathy. It awakens my interest in growing with values. I really learned a lot about this
topic. This topic is easy to understand. Values replicate our sense of right and wrong. They
help us grow and develop. They help us create the future we want. The choices we create
each day are a mirrored image of our values. I will learn and never forget how values
change my mindset.
