BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The 21st century has witnessed rapid advancement in technology and this has

paved way for several studies on social media use and effect.

Hendrick (2013) looks at the way technology began to change very fast in the 20th

Century stating that, after the first super computers were created in the 1940s, scientists

and engineers began to develop ways to create networks between those computers, and

this later led to the birth of the Internet.

BACKGROUND

After the invention of blogging, social media began to explode in popularity. He

sighted some social media Sites like MySpace and LinkedIn stating that they

gained importance in the early 2000s, and sites like Photo bucket and Flickr

enabled online photo sharing.

He added that, YouTube came out in 2005, and created entirely new way for

people to communicate across great distances. By 2006, Facebook and Twitter

both became available to users throughout the world.

BACKGROUND

To Tripathi et al (2018), it is an essential part of our society nowadays. The

online social media has caused intense transformation in the way people

communicate and interact .

Dave Chaffey’s Global social media statistics research summary (2022) states

that 57.6% of the world's population uses social media. The average daily usage

is 2 hours and 27 minutes (October 2021).

BACKGROUND

The 21st century has come with a high level of digitization

which has led social media to be incorporated in fields of

business, marketing and the health sector as well.

Social media is an inseparable part of our everyday lives. It is always there, from when we

wake up until we fall asleep with our phones in hand( Deyan 2022)
BACKGROUND

Several researchers sought to find out what people do with the media and how

it affects them. Some of such studies focus on social media use and effect on

peoples behavior, educational performance, organizational performance, health

impacts, etc.

I therefore carryout this study to find out why people use social media, what they use it

for, the time they spend on social media, and the effects social media has on the health of

users in Buea, Cameroon.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Several studies have suggest a link between
social media use and its effect on the health of
users. In their work, Scott et al (2019) stated
that there is significant current attention
towards the possible impact of screen time and
social media on our adolescents’ health.

THEORETICAL REVIEW

Theory of Social Interaction
The theory of social media interaction is a social media and nursing
theory which explains how social media is used to get health information
online.

The theory purports that health is managed through effective transfer of

knowledge to individuals, clients, and families.
THEORY OF SOCIAL INTERACTION
The theory of Social Media Interaction has four underlying
assumptions:
1. Social Media is a means of accessing and gaining
information.
2. Social media creates a virtual community where
interaction occurs.
3. Different groups may have diverse cultural practices
regarding the acquisition and dissemination of information.
4. People who engage in interaction are rationally seeking
to maximize their health.
The theory of Social Media Interaction has four
fundamental propositions:
1. Interaction changes over a period of time.
2. Social media promotes wellness.
3. Successful interaction leads to active participation.
4. Social media proliferates information quickly.

Importance of the theory of social interaction to this study.

CULTIVATION THEORY
Cultivation theory (or cultivation analysis) was introduced in the 1960’s

by the Hungarian-born American professor George Gerbner as a means

to examine the influence of television on viewers (Gerbner, 1969).

This theory implies that those exposed to media interpret social realities

according to how such realities are portrayed in the media.

CULTIVATION THEORY

Of particular interest during the initial stage of research was the possible

impact of the exposure to violence on the viewers of television programs

(Settle, 2018)as cited in Perera, (2021). Gerbner’s introduction of

cultivation theory was part of the larger Cultural Indicators Project which

was a research study commissioned for the National Violence

Commission (Gerbner, Gross, Morgan & Signorielli, 1986).
