PAVEMENT DESIGN OF CHOWNKIMAN SWADDI BHUNDRI ROAD

1. INDRODUCTION

The work of pavement design for S/R of Chownkiman, Swaddi,Bhundri (R.D

0.00 to 15.00) Distt. Ludhiana was Designed by Buttar Engineers and
Consultants Moga.

2. SCOPE
1.Traftic Count data
2. Determination of BENKELMAN BEAM DEFLECTION
3. Pavement Design

3. EVALUTION OF SUB GRADE

Traffic Count
A traftic survey is needed for existing road that are proposed for Strengthening
widening and Raising in order to estimate the extent of pavement
strengthening may also be useful in prioritizing maintenance activities. The
purpose of the traffic survey is to establish the Average Annual Daily Traffic
(AADT) Traffic Count Date has been collected for 7 day for two point for 24
hours. Traffic census data has been given in Report.

3.1 .BENKELMAN BEAM DEFLECTION TEST;

The test was conducted cross checked for crust design as per IRC 81-1997
A Standard truck with a rear axle Weight of 8170 kg with double tyre axle
5.60kg/cm' tyre pressure was used For Loading the pavement. In one km
road length 20 continuous point each 50 m Interval were identified for
observing the deflection by passing loaded truck and deflection was
measured by a dial gauge havinga least count 0.01 mm.
Dual wheel of the truck was centered above the selected point & the
Probe of the Benkelman Beam was inserted between the dual tyre, the beam was
adjusted and checked for free movement of arm. The dial gauge was set at
10mm and initial reading was recorded. The truck was slowly driven to at
distance of 270cm &stopped ,dial gauge reading was recorded as intermediate
reading the truck was further driven to 9.00 m and dial gauge reading was
recorded.

4. EVALUATION OF PAVEMENT STRUCTUAL STRENGTH

The performance of Flexible pavement is clearly related to the elastic

deflection of pavement under the wheel loads. The deformation or elastic
deflection under a given load depend upon sub grade soil type , its moisture
content & compaction, pavement thickness ,quality of pavement course,
drainage condition & pavement surface temperature etc. For evaluation of
strengthening requirement of existing flexible pavement of project Road. The
measurement of pavement deflection have been carried out by Benkelman Beam
device following the guidelines on IRC 81-1997. The Characteristic deflection
for design purpose has to be taken mean deflection plus standard deviation. The
moisture correction factor for clay/sandy soil sub grade for low rainfallannual
rainfall=1300mm) areas has been applied.

5. PAVEMENT DESIGN:

As per Recommendation and average BENKELMAN BEAM DEFLECTION

For design load of 2.0 MSA IRC 81-1997. Is being to obtain the total pavement
crust thickness required over the sub grade and existing crust for design life of
base and sub base
pavement. The total design thickness is divided into
thickness and wearing course are recommended as under;
