Electrical Materials and Tools

BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR LEARNERS

Electrical Tools and Equipment

Before you proceed to do any electrical project, knowledge of the proper tools is essential in getting
the job done efficiently, correctly, and more important is your safety. The old saying, “use the right tool
for the job”, couldn’t be more relevant, especially when it comes to electrical work.
Electrical work can be accomplished systematically to save time, effort, and resources. Most of the
work cannot be done using your bare hands. To do the task, electrical tools or equipment are needed to
perform the job. This lesson will discuss the function or use of each tool or equipment used in house wiring
or any electrical installations.
The following are common electrical tools and equipment needed in the installation of electrical
wiring.

SCREWDRIVERS – Hand tools made of

hardened steel with rubber or plastic

Screwdriver - The blade tip is a wedge-
1.a shaped and resembles a negative (-) sign.
This is used to drive screws with a single
slot head.

copper wires. https://www.google.com/search?q=electrical+tools+and+equipment&source

I. Automatic Wire Stripper-Hand-held tool

also known as cable strippers which are
designed to remove insulation or outer
sheath from electrical wires. There are
various types available from stripping the

application.

II. Electrician’s Knife. This is used by

linemen to remove insulation of wire and

5. cables in low and high voltage

transmission lines.
II.

III. Portable Electric drill. A small drilling
machine with a chuck capacity of ¼ to 3/8
size of drill bits. It is used in making holes
6. on metal sheets and concrete walls.

https://www.google.com/search?q=electrical+tools+and+equipment&source
III.
IV. Hacksaw. This tool is used to cut metal
conduit and armored cable. The
hand hacksaw has a U- shaped frame and
blades 20 to 30 cm (8 to 12 inches) long,
1.25 cm (0.5 inch) wide, and 0.06 cm
7.
(0.025 inch) thick that close the U and are
placed under tension by a screw
adjustment in the handle.

Electrical Supplies and Materials

Electrical materials are developed and manufactured for a special purpose such as to:

1. control the flow of electrical current in an electric circuit;

2. intended to carry electrical current from the source to the load or current consuming apparatus; but no
to consume electrical current.
3. hold and protects wires to its fixtures inside and outside houses and buildings; and
4. protects houses, buildings, appliances and instruments from any form damages.
The following are the most commonly used electrical materials:

Convenience outlet- a device that acts as

a convenient source of electrical energy
for current consuming appliances. It is
where the male plug of an appliance is
1
inserted and usually fastened on the wall
or connected in an extension cord. It

maybe single, duplex, triplex or multiplex
and could be surface type or flush type.
Male plug- a device inserted to a
convenience outlet to allow the flow of
electrical current. A conductor is attached
2
to the plug and the other end is connected
to a current consuming device or an
appliance. https://www.google.com/search?q=electrical+supplies+and+materials&source

Lamp holders- devices that hold and

protect the lamp and are also called as
Lamp Sockets or Receptacles. These come
3
in many designs and sizes. They are
classified as flush, hanging (weather
proof/chain sockets) and surface types.
https://www.google.com/search?q=flush+and+surface+type+lamp+holders&tbm=isch&ved
Switch - a device that connects and
disconnects the flow of electrical current
in a circuit. There are many shapes,
4
designs, and types and they are classified
as hanging, flush, and surface type
switches. https://www.google.com/search?q=flush+and+surface+type+switch&tbm=isch&ved

Flush Type Surface Type

Fuse - a circuit protective device that

automatically blows and cut the flow of
5
current when over load or short circuit
happens.

https://www.google.com/search?q=circuit+breakers+and+types+fuses&tbm=isch&ved

Circuit Breaker - a protective device

which automatically open the circuit
6
when it is overloaded without injury to
itself.
https://www.google.com/search?q=circuit+breakers+and+types+fuses&tbm=isch&ved
Junction Box - an octagonal shaped
electrical material where the connections
or joints of wires are being done. It is also
7
where the flush type lamp holder is
attached. This could be made of metal or
plastic (PVC) Polyvinylchloride. https://www.google.com/search?q=electrical+supplies+and+materials&source

Utility Box - a rectangular shaped

metallic or plastic (PVC) material in
8
which flush type convenience outlet and
switch are attached.
https://www.google.com/search?q=electrical+supplies+and+materials&source

Flat Cord- Is a duplex stranded wire

used for temporary wiring installation and
commonly used in extension cord
9
assembly. It comes in a roll of 150 meters
and with sizes of gauge # 18 and gauge #
16 AWG (American Wire Gauge). https://www.google.com/search?q=electrical+supplies+and+materials&source
Electrical Wire/Conductor- Materials
which easily allows the flow of an
electrical current. Either:
a. Stranded wire which is made of
multiple strands mostly with 7 strands
10 Stranded Solid
joined together to make a single wire.
b. Solid wire is made of a single strand of
copper or aluminum wire. These are used
https://www.google.com/search?q=electrical+supplies+and+materials&source
in wiring installation inside and outside
the buildings.
Conduits/Pipes- electrical materials used
as the passage of wires for additional
protection and insulation. These could be

11 rigid metallic, flexible metallic conduit

(FMC), rigid non- metallic (PVC), and
https://www.google.com/search?q=electrical+supplies+and+materials&source
flexible non-metallic or corrugated plastic
conduit (CPC)

Clamps- electrical materials used to hold

12 and anchor electrical conduits on flat

surfaces or walls.

https://www.google.com/search?q=electrical+supplies+and+materials&source

Connectors- used to attach metallic or

13 non-metallic conduit to the junction or

utility boxes or conduit to conduit.
https://dchcorp.wordpress.com/2014/04/23/pvc-pipes/
Panelboard/Panel box - as a single
panel or group of panel units designed
for assembly in the form of a single
panel, including buses and automatic
overcurrent devices(circuit breaker) , and

14 equipped with or without switches for the

control of light, heat, or power circuits;
designed to be placed in
a cabinet or cutout box placed in or
against a wall, partition, or other support; https://www.google.com/search?q=panel+box&tbm=isch&ved

and accessible only from the front
