BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Electrical task can be accomplished systematically to save time, effort, and

resources. Most of the work cannot be done using bare hands. To do the task, electrical
tools or materials are needed to perform the job. This lesson will discuss the function/use of
each tool or materials used in electrical wiring installations.

The following are common electrical tools needed in the installation of electrical
wiring/devices
1. Screwdrivers -these tools are made of steel hardened and tempered at the tip used to
loosen or tighten screws with slotted heads. They come in various sizes and shapes.

1.1 Flat Screwdriver - the blade tip is wedge

shaped and resembles a negative (-) sign.
This is used to drive screws with a single slot
head. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Screw_Driver_display.jpg

1.2 Phillips Screwdriver- this has a cross tip

resembling a positive (+) sign. This is used to
drive screws with cross slot heads.

1.3 Allen Screwdriver/ Wrench- This could be

in the shape of screwdriver or a wrench, its
function is to drive a screw with hexagonal
slot head.

1.4 Stubby Screwdriver - it comes in either

Standard or Phillips screwdriver with short
shank or blade and a shorted handle, used to
turn screws in tight space where standard

screwdriver cannot be used. photo-two-old-red-short-screwdrivers-isolated-white-image36880550

2. Pliers - are made of metal with insulators in the handle. They are used for cutting,
twisting, bending, and holding wires and cables.

2.1 Combination Pliers – usually called as

linemen’s pliers, used to hold, bend, and
cut electrical wires and cables. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Knipex_03_01_200.jpg

2.2 Side Cutting Pliers – also called as

diagonal pliers. This type of pliers is used
for cutting small to medium size of wires

2.3 Long Nose Pliers - This could be in the

shape of screwdriver or a wrench, its function
is to drive a screw with hexagonal slot
head. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Klein_Tools_D203-6.jpg

7. Wire Stripper - this is a tool used for removing

insulation of medium-sized wires. It has two types:
1.Manual - has round holes that correspond to wire size.
Removing of insulation is done while squeezing and
pulling out wire. This can also be used to cut medium-
sized copper wires.
2. Automatic - operated by squeezing where one end
will hold the wire and the other will remove the 7.1 Manual

8.Pipe bender – a tool used to bend rigid

metallic conduit by the use of hands
and/or foot

1.Hydraulic Pipe bender – this type of

bender uses hydraulic (oil) pressure to

retractable and coils into a compact case. It is used for
measuring linear and perpendicular distance, usually has
inch and centimeter as units of measurement

Electrical materials/devices are essential components to safely utilize electricity when
delivered by the power distribution companies. The following are the most common electrical
materials/devices:

1. Convenience Outlet (CO)- is a device

that acts as a convenient source of
electrical energy for current consuming
appliances. It is where the male plug of an
appliance is inserted and usually fastened
on the wall or connected in an extension Surface type CO

APPLICABLE to be classified below. Write your answer on your quiz notebook

Measuring Cutting

Driving Bending

8
ACTIVITY 2: Story Telling (10 points)

Directions: Write your OWN STORY/SCENARIO, in a paragraph form, on

when/where/how you can utilize, at least 5 electrical tools and 5 electrical materials that were
in the lesson. You can refer from your experience or plans in repairing/troubleshooting at
home to answer this activity. 1 point for each tool/material that will be correctly mentioned.
UNDERLINE the tool/material.

REMEMBER

Electrical tools are objects that aid the user to do the installation, troubleshooting, and
repair properly and quickly. There are different tools available and they can be grouped as
hand tools, electric tools, hydraulic, and pneumatic tools. Choosing the right tool is important
to do the task effectively and efficiently.
Electrical materials are products being installed and/or replaced. These where the
tools are intended for.
Electrical installation and maintenance will not happen without the electrical tools and
materials for they are essential in this course.
