HANDOUT IN PRACTICAL RESEARCH 2 FOR WRITTEN WORKS NO. 1, 2, 3, and 4 AND PERFORMANCE TASK NO.

Reminder: All answers should be written in one-two pieces of yellow paper ONLY.

Introduction:
Welcome to your Practical Research 2 subject!
You have finished your Practical Research 1 subject and most probably, you will ask about its difference
from Practical Research 2. Practical Research 1 is practically qualitative research (which is about narrations and
stories in general) while PRACTICAL RESEARCH 2 IS QUANTITATIVE in nature.
Quantitative research is defined as a systematic investigation of phenomena by gathering quantifiable
data and performing statistical, mathematical, or computational techniques. Quantitative research collects
information from existing and potential customers using sampling methods and sending out online surveys,
online polls, questionnaires, etc., the results of which can be depicted in the form of numerical. After careful
understanding of these numbers to predict the future of a product or service and make changes accordingly
(QuestionPro, n.d.)
In short, it differs from your Practical Research 1 subject simply because Practical Research 2 uses
numbers to interpret data, not narrations/stories.
PRACTICAL RESEARCH 2 THEN USES STATISTICS.
Are you ready? This handout is a simplified version of your learning activity sheets in research. This
material seeks to help you understand the major and most important components of research by highlighting
only the ‘must’ while giving you simple insights and explanations.

Written Work No. 1: In your own view, which is better in
interpreting data, quantitative or qualitative research? Write
you answer in one short paragraph. 10 points.

Lesson 1: Choosing the Right Topic

When choosing a research topic, you have to consider several things and among these things, the following are the most
important:
1. Relevance
In this criterion, you should consider a topic if it is related or connected to your field or in your case if it is related
to your strand or to your future career Examples:
A. Strand: HUMSS- Career: Education- Topic: Teaching in the New Normal
B. Strand: Home Economics- Career: Cooking- Topic: Sanitary Practices of Chefs
C. Strand: ICT- Career: IT- Topic: Development of Online Enrolment System
2. Novelty
In this criterion, you should remember the word FRESHNESS. Your topic should be NEW and FRESH, which
means that it should be related to the present condition/state of people or there are a few pieces of information about it in
the field.
Example:
No Novelty- Learning Anxiety
With Novelty- Learning Anxiety in Online Classes
3. Impact
In this criterion, you should be reminded that the topic that you want to research about should affect you, your
community, and other people. When thinking of a research topic, you should consider that it should IMPORTANT and it
will change the lives and perspectives of other people.
In short, when thinking of a topic, you should first ask yourself:
1. Is it related to my strand/career?
2. Is it new?
3. Is it important?
If your answer is YES to all these questions, then there is a big possibility that your research topic/topics are good to go.
Written Work no. 2: Write Three Topics and Explain
(10 points each)- Criteria- Topics- 3 points,
Explanation- 7 points.

Instruction: Write three topics that you want to research about. After listing, explain what makes your topics relevant,
novel, and impactful in one short paragraph.
Example:
Topic 1: Teaching English through Modular Learning
Explanation: It is related to my career because I am a teacher. It is novel because modular learning is just new because of
the pandemic. It is important because I want to know the problems of English teachers in teaching using modules to help
them in solving these problems.
Now it is your turn to write and explain THREE TOPICS.
Lesson 2: Writing the Title
When writing research titles, you have to consider research designs. So, what are the quantitative research designs?
1. DESCRIPTIVE RESEARCH TITLE
Example: READING COMPREHENSION LEVEL OF GRADE 12 STUDENTS

Notice the following:

There is one topic in the title. In the given example, it is the term READING COMPREHENSION. This
is the topic of the study.
Then, there is one group of people in the title. In the given example, it is the term GRADE 12
STUDENTS.

Another example:
CHALLENGES IN MODULAR LEARNING AMONG TVL STUDENTS
Topic: Challenges in Modular Learning
Group: TVL students

2. DESCRIPTIVE-CORRELATIONAL RESEARCH TITLE

Example: GENDER AND READING COMPREHENSION LEVEL OF GRADE 12 STUDENTS

Notice the following:

There are two topics in the title. In the given example, it is the term GENDER and READING
COMPREHENSION.
Also, there is one group of people in the title. In the given example, it is the term GRADE 12
STUDENTS.

Another Example:
HUMSS STUDENTS’ ENGAGEMENT AND PERFORMANCE IN ONLINE CLASSES
Topic 1: Engagement in Online Classes
Topic 2: Performance in Online Classes

Reminder: The research titles that you are going to write will depend on the research designs that you are going to
use. In writing the titles, make sure that the following are considered:

1. The titles are brief/short and they do not contain unnecessary words.

2. The titles provide immediate information about the topic that you want to talk about in your study.
Written Work No. 3: Write two (2) titles related to your
strand. One descriptive research and one correlational
research. (10 points each)
Criteria: Relevance to the research design- 5 points,
Correctness of the Title- 5 points
Note: Make sure that you will NOT copy from the
internet or from your classmates because these titles will
be defended through online/offline modalities.

Lesson 3: Writing the Statement of the Problem (SOP)

The statement of the problem is the soul of the research paper. It gives the backbone of the study. So it is
important to know the considerations in writing the SOP.
In writing the Statement of the Problem, you should consider the research design as well. There are corresponding
formats that you should follow in writing your SOP.
What are these formats?
1. SOP FOR DESCRIPTIVE RESEARCH
This part is the General
TITLE: SOCIO-CULTURAL PERSPECTIVES IN SCIENCE EDUCATION Statement of the Problem

This study seeks to identify the socio-cultural perspectives of teachers and students in science education.
Specifically, this study seeks to answer the following questions:
How are the respondents described in terms of:
1.1 Cultural beliefs;
1.2 Social status; and The first question is
the Transition
1.3 Gender? Question

2. How are the socio-cultural perspectives in science education practiced in terms of:
2.1 Social interaction.

The final question is The second question

about is about the main
implication/intervention topic

3. What practical implications can be drawn in teaching and learning science?

Let us discuss one-by-one:
1. The General Statement of the Problem (GSOP) is a summary of the entire paper. It reflects or is connected to
the WORDS written in the title.
2. The Transition Question is about the profile/demography of the respondents (e.g. age, gender, educational
background etc.)
3. The Second Question is about the main topic of the study. In the given example, “how are the socio-cultural
perspectives in education practiced?” is the same as the main topic of the study which is reflected/written in the
research title.
4. The Final Question is either (1) implication (the future effect of the study to your field/strand/career or (2)
proposed intervention/action plan if there are problems that you want to be solved through plans and programs.
Examples of research questions for intervention/action plan:

 What action plan can be proposed to lessen the anxiety of the students in online class?
 What intervention program can be proposed to enhance the performance of students in research?
2. SOP FOR DESCRIPTIVE - CORRELATIONAL RESEARCH

TITLE: LEARNING ANXIETY AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF SHS STUDENTS IN PHYSICS

IN THE NEW NORMAL
This part is the General
Statement of the Problem
This study seeks to correlate senior high school students’ learning anxiety and their academic
performance in Physics in the New Normal.

Specifically, this study seeks to answer the following questions:

The first question is about the
1. How is the learning anxiety of the respondents described? first topic/concept in the title

The second question is about the

2. How is the academic performance of the students described? second topic/concept in the title

3. What is the relationship between the students’ learning anxiety and their academic performance?
The third question is about the
4. What interventions can be proposed to lessen the anxiety of the students in learning Physics?
relationship of the two topics

The final question is

about
implication/intervention

1. The General Statement of the Problem (GSOP) is a summary of the entire paper. It reflects or is connected
to the WORDS written in the title.

2. The First Question is about the first topic written in the title. Look at the title, the first concept is learning
anxiety so it is written in SOP no. 1.

3. The Second Question is about the second topic written in the title. Look at the title, the second concept is
academic performance so it is written in SOP no. 2.

4. The Third Question is about the relationship of concept 1 and concept 2. “What is the relationship between
concept 1 (learning anxiety) and concept 2 (academic performance) of the students?”

5. The Final Question is either (1) implication (the future effect of the study to your field/strand/career or (2)
proposed intervention/action plan if there are problems that you want to be solved through plans and
programs.

Performance Task No. 1: Choose ONLY ONE of the titles you

wrote in written work no. 3. Based on the title, write your own
statement of the problem. (50 points) Criteria- Correctness- 25
points, Relevance to the Title and Research Design- 25 points
Note: Make sure that you will NOT copy from the internet or
from your classmates because these titles will be defended
through online/offline modalities.

Lesson 4: Writing the Rationale

In simple explanation, the rationale is the explanation of the importance of the research paper. When writing your
rationale, consider these questions: Why is your study important in solving the problems you see in your field? Why is
your research important?
Example:
Title: TRAINING NEEDS ANALYSIS OF CAMPUS JOURNALISTS
In a wider range, this study may serve as a contribution to the body of knowledge Filipino campus journalists
need not only in competing for press conferences but more importantly in serving their colleagues considering the
importance of campus journalism in uplifting the moral standards, critical thinking and intellectual being of the readers
and writers throughout the country.
I asked myself, why is my study/research important? My answer: It is important because campus journalism is
important. And I wrote my EXPLANATION in the sample rational written above.

Written Work no. 4: Using your chosen title and your SOP
in performance task no. 1, write one-paragraph
EXPLANATION of why your research is important. You
may site your own experiences, experiences of your
classmates, and other studies/literatures/readings to explain
your points. (20 points) Criteria-10 points- relevance to the
title/topic, 10 points- evidences/proofs and explanation
Note: Make sure that you will NOT copy from the internet or
from your classmates because these titles will be defended
through online/offline modalities.
