1. SWITCHBOARD PANEL SELECTORS:
a) LOCAL – REMOTE selector (if required)
b) MANUAL – AUTOMATIC selector
c) START – STOP selector for every use (electrical motor, solenoid valves, air compressor if supplied)
d) Warning lights (In operation, Stand by, Alarm)
e) RESET button

2. FUNCTIONAL ELEMENTS:
a) Frequency Inverter (for the control of the electrical motor absorbed power and for the gradually start of the
screen);
b) Safety module (for the control of the safety switches, emergency push button, etc.);
c) PLC with display to control and adjust the screen logic and its operating periods.

3. MODE SCREEN OPERATION

Off mode

The screen does not run.

Manual mode

In hand mode, the screen motor runs continuously in the direction selected: FORWARD – OFF – REVERSE. The reverse
selector shall be instable and used only for 15-20 seconds.
Auto mode
The screen motor operates when:
a) All safety devices have been reset (micro switch, thermal relay, inverter, emergency push button).
b) When the upstream level reaches the start level set up. Then, when the level decrease again, the screen
continues to operate for a Screen Delay Time.
c) If the grid does not receive a start signal for a prolonged time, in the electrical panel it is possible to set up a timer
that operates the machine independently of the upstream level.
Note: In auto mode the screen is not able to reverse.

4. WASHING OPERATION

a) Washing bar installed on the drum (Standard):

Manual mode
In manual mode, the solenoid valve opens continuously if the START-STOP selector is in START mode. If no selector switch is
provided, the solenoid valve opens continuously as long as the screen operates in manual mode.
Off mode
The solenoid valve does not operate.
Auto mode
In auto mode, the solenoid valve opens when the screen operates and closes when the screen stops. (A solenoid valve opening
time can be set to limit the water consumption).
b) Second washing bar installed on the drum side (optonal):
Manual ball valve which is operated by the same solenoid valve as the main washing bar on the drum. (Pos. a)
c) Transport pipe solenoid valve operation (optional):
Manual mode
In hand mode, the solenoid valve opens continuously when the START-STOP selector is in the START mode.
Off mode
The solenoid valve does not operate.
Auto mode

Pag. 2 of 5
In auto mode, the solenoid valve opens and closes according to the ON Timer and OFF Timer. ON operating cycle and OFF
stop cycle periods are included in the screen operation time.

5. SCREEN STANDBY
The screen standby pilot light illuminates when the screen inspection door is closed, E-Stop is ok, screen is in auto-mode,
screen is not operating and no fault is present.

6. EMERGENCY STOP AND INSPECTION DOOR

The screens stops immediately if the E-Stop is pressed. Screen stops when its inspection door is opened. After the E-Stop is
restored or the inspection doors are closed, the operator must press the reset pushbutton to resume operation.

7. PROXIMITY SWITCH (optional):

The proximity switch shall be installed near the drive wheels. This device checks the drum is rotating correctly through
inspection plates welded on the drum.
The main switchboard panel shall have a timer through set a pause time between one inspection plate and the other. If this time
exceed the one previously set, an alarm signal shall be sent.

8. SCREEN MOTOR OVERLOAD (FREQUENCY INVERTER).

When a motor overload condition is recorded by the Inverter, the screen motor stops and the system fault light illuminates. After
the overload condition is restored, press the reset pushbutton to resume operation.

9. SCREEN DRIVE MALFUNCTION

If a START signal is observed but the motor does not operate, the emergency alarm is lighted. The cause could be an inverter
malfunction or a thermic overload. After restoring the malfunction press RESET button to operate the screen.

10. SCREEN LEVEL SENSORS

The screen operates when the upstream START level is reached.
The upstream level shall be controlled by a level sensor (sensor placed upstream with a 4-20 mmA signal to set up the START
level according to the screen size).
The screen management requires one of the following systems:
1. Water level management (system installed into the channel):
 Upstream conductive rods level probe.
 No. 1 minimum level (equipment stop).
 No. 1 operating level (equipment start),
 No. 1 emergency level (emergency signal)
 Upstream ultrasonic level probe, 4÷20mA to set the levels.
 Upstream/downstream ultrasonic probe for the differential level measurement, 4÷20mA to set the levels.
The level sensor shall be placed in an channel area where the flow rate is as constant as possible.

11. SCREEN IN STAND BY

In case the screen is in stand by (pause with timer) and the water level increases because of the filter clogging, the screen shall
operate when the set level is reached and shall work for a set period of time (refer to times schedule).

12. START AND STOP TIMES

In case of low flow rate the level sensor does not operate and the screen shall work in AUTOMATIC mode with set PAUSE and
START times (see schedule no.1).

SCHEDULE 1

Description Recommend time: Adjustment:

Spiramatic working time 60 – 90 sec 1-300 sec

Spiramatic pause time 10 min.* 1-1000min
It operates every time the Spiramatic runs, it is possible to set a working and
Washing bar place on the drum.
a pause time.
Working time 15sec. (n° 1 rotation) 1-100 sec.
Pause time 15sec. (n° 1 rotation) 1-100 sec.
Working time (compacting zone) 30sec. 1-100 sec.
Pause time 30min. 30-300 min.

* 10 min is the time when the screen operation is inhibited. If the upstream level increases above the start level in schedule 2 ,
the screen will start automatically even if the 10 min pause is not over.
The screen will operate for 60-90 sec (working time).

13. START LEVELS

During the operation through level sensors the operating times are the same, the START signal shall be given when the set
level is reached (see Schedule 2)

Schedule 2

Screen size Ø START level Max. admissible level

VSA 600 400 mm 500 mm
VSA 800 500 mm 650 mm
VSA 1000 600 mm 700 mm
VSA 1200 650 mm 750 mm
VSA 1400 700 mm 850 mm
VSA 1600 800 mm 1100 mm
VSA 1800 850 mm 1200 mm

After the START, the screen shall operate for the same time as shown in Schedule 1 (working time). After that time the
Spiramatic shall stop if the upstream level decreases to the set STOP level. It is not possible to indicate precisely the STOP
level since it is different in every single application. The differential level Δ between START and STOP varies from 150 up to 300
mm depending on the screen size.
For example: if the START level is 1100 mm the STOP level can be set between 950 mm and 800 mm. However, this level shall
be further determined on site during the screens operation and according to the plant requirements.

14. PARALLEL SCREEN OPERATION

In case of parallel screens an operational sequence (by using a PLC) is recommended. The screens shall work one after the
other so that all filters are kept efficient and thus avoiding material deposition in the channel area immediately upstream the
screen.
In case of low flow rate, proceed as follows:

Pag. 4 of 5
a) Operate the first screen through the recommended START level (see Schedule 1)
b) If the upstream level decreases until the set differential level Δ between START and STOP, the screen shall
operates for the set time (see schedule 1) and then stop.
c) The second screen shall start at the next START input signal.
d) The third screen shall start at the next START input signal and so on.
In case of high flow rates, suggest as follows:
a) Operate the first screen through the recommended START level (see Schedule 1)
b) In case the inlet level increases, set a second START level (50 mm higher than the first one) to operate the
second screen.
c) In case the level does not decrease after the set working time, a third screen shall operate.
d) If the upstream level reaches the set differential level Δ from START and STOP, the screens operate for the
set time (see Schedule 1) and then they shall stop.
e) At all START input a different screen operates.

In case of more than two screens operating, START levels shall be set up, one of every screens. The difference between one
level and the other one is +50mm, beginning from the START level advised.
