It Is Impossible To Maintain Privacy In

An Online Environment. Discuss.

Technology is great in so many ways. It has provided us with more
communication access- access to knowledge at our finger tips, and so much
more. It has overall made life easier, but maybe too easy, and has made
things a lot less private. This results from us having to be extra careful
with security on the internet. Internet security is important to protect
our privacy, protect us from fraud, and viruses that could destroy a piece
of our device. Many people underestimate the importance of online privacy,
but they should be aware of how much information they’re sharing — not
just on social networks but also through browsing.
As the internet spread across all over the world, it is possible for us to
communicate with each other online. With the instant messaging and video
conferencing, it is obvious that there were no barriers for us to
communicate through the internet. Many apps have also been improved for
better communication. For example, we use What’s app, Lines, Snapchat,
Wechat. But as before there are no end-to-end encryption used; there is
always a chance that a third party may view the text you send to a specific
person. Now the we have end-to-end encryption done, it helps us by
providing some sense of privacy and peace of mind that our communications
will not be intercepted, and stored files will not end up in wrong hands
even if the carrier device is lost or stolen. Almost any mode of
communication could be made secure by including better encryption and
authentication protocols, and additional security features like data
expiration. All you have to do is look for the right apps, which
specifically help them with their security and/or privacy.
Is there danger in having too much information at our fingertips?
Digital technology has become an important part of our daily lives. Our
laptops, smartphones, computers, and tablets are immediate resources and
sources of information at our fingertips. Theoretically, having so much
information at our fingertips should be a good thing. It should help us
make informed and smart choices. In reality, it seems to do more harm than
good. Like for example, distracting students- Smartphones have a bad
reputation in classrooms and there have been strong cases for banning them
in schools. It has become addictive and it can hurt our social skills.
Extended screen time can result in health complication like insomnia,
eyestrain, and increased anxiety and depression. And ironically, people
tend to search about these health complications on the internet, rather
than consulting a doctor.
How Private is Your Privacy?
Would you go up to a random stranger and hand them all of your personal
information, like your home address, social security number, credit card
number, etc…? This is exactly what we do every single day when we are on
the internet signing up for online banking, social networks, and even
online shopping.
The internet especially has been an invention that many people today do not
believe they could live without. It is used daily not only to do research
for papers, but also to look up recipes, book airplane flights and hotels,
or even shop from the privacy of one’s own home. And this has made it
easier for the government and others to monitor our daily lives. This is
violated when the government infringes and essentially searches through
one’s activity that we people are doing in our own homes. In a way this is
very much the same as if the government were to come in without a search
warrant and look through one’s belongings.
