This procedure describes the methods and means required to establish the storage,
issuance, release, return and conditioning of all welding consumables.

II. REFERANCE DOCUMENTS:

 ASME IX
 ASME B 31.3
 ASME V
 API 1104
 ASME B 31.8
 API 650

III. RECEPTION AND STORAGE:

The coated electrodes, filler metals and flux are stored and handled in accordance
with the recommendations of the manufacturer and client’s specification. The electrodes,
filler metals and flux must be laid out according to the type, the mark and dimensions and
be preserved in suitable storage facilities. All none identified product (without compliance
certificate), not conform to the specifications or showing signs of deterioration must be
kept away of production. All materials shall not be stored directly on the floor

IV. LOW HYDROGEN ELECTRODES:

The electrodes with LH (basic) coating must be laid out in a drying oven by type and
dimensions in order to avoid any confusion with different electrodes. A welding foreman
will take care of this operation and will be given the responsibility to provide the welders
with electrodes.
Baking temperature: In accordance with manufacturer recommendations.
Holding temperature: 150°C
At field, the electrodes will be preserved in individual portable drying ovens (quivers) at
a temperature of 90°-100°C. At the end of the shift the welder shall return all electrodes to
the welding foreman for re-baking.
Important: the operation of drying cannot be repeated more than twice

The baking oven and holding ovens shall be calibrated every six (6) months.

VI. CELLULOSE ELECTRODES:

Cellulose coverings for E6010 electrodes need moisture levels of “between” 3% to
7% for proper usage, therefore storage conditions above ambient temperature may dry
them out too much and have adversely affect their operation.
Cellulosic type covered electrodes received in hermetically sealed containers shall be
issued for use without baking.

VII. BARE WIRE:

Spooled and straight lengths of bare and flux core wire shall be inspected. Spooled
bare wire which is copper coated shall be packaged in accordance with the manufacturer’s
standard. Spooled bare wire without a copper coating and flux – core wire shall either be
packaged in a sealed plastic bag which contains a desiccant or a chemical which
established an artificial vapor, or wrapped in a paper which provides a vapor. Each spool
shall be marked with at least the following information ASME SFA, AWS or other
classification. If spooled wire has started to rust or has been oil or water soaked, the wire
will not be used. Straight lengths of bare wire shall be furnished in moisture proof
containers such as cardboard tubes or boxes. Each length of bare wire shall be tagged or
imprinted with the ASME SFA, AWS or other classification. Straight lengths may be used,
if they can be cleaned.

VIII. GASES:
Gases used shall be of a quality suitable of welding. They will be stored in a controlled
area, each type of gas will segregated from any other type of gas to avoid the possibility of
mixing. Gas bottles are colour coded by a painted ring around the top of the bottle
ARGON = Yellow
C02 = Grey
OXYGEN = White
CO2 / ARGON = Yellow Band with Grey Stripes
NITROGEN = Black

ACETYLINE = No Banding

IX. FLUXES:
The bags of flux must be stored under conditions of suitable temperature and moisture
(the moisture rate not more than 60%). Before its use flux must be dried at 250°-300°C for
2 to 4 hours then maintained in holding oven at a temperature of 150+25°C. Recycled flux
must be cleaned and any foreign body, impurity or solid slag will be removed with a
suitable method such as sifting and be mixed with new flux in the following proportions: ¼
at least of new flux with ¾ of recycled flux. A welding foreman will take care of the respect
of this procedure.

X. MANAGEMENT:
The welding foreman responsible for the zone, establish a consumable request sheet
according to type, amount required; size and diameter.
The consumable request sheet must be approved and signed by the welding/QC
responsible who will check the conformity of the filler metals required with the applicable
WPS.
The welding foreman will receive the required quantities of electrodes as stated on the
consumable request form, from the warehouse and shall be responsible for any baking
and their issue to welders.

XI. STUB ENDS:

All stub ends shall be returned to welder foreman at the end of each shift for proper
disposal.

XII. SAFETY:
All personnel shall be issued with the correct PPE
All confined space entry will require a separate procedure
All company and site safety rules shall be adhered too.
