Introduction:

Concussions in sports, particularly football, is a significant health concern.  While

there are documented benefits to participation in sports, there is debate that the risks outweigh
the benefits.  A great deal of effort has gone into attempting to make sports such as football safer,
including the solution being currently tested in the Ivy League.
The purpose of this assignment is to discuss the implications of a rule change being used in
college football, and whether or not it (or similar rules in other sports) could go far enough to
reduce the issue of concussions in sports.  Be sure to address all aspects of the assignment as
described below and follow formatting and submission guidelines.
Conceptual Steps:

1. Start by watching the Big Hits, Broken Dreams video and reading

the Football Concussion Rates Drop After Rule Change Study (TIME Magazine)

1. If necessary, briefly research the issue of Concussions in Sports, as well as overall

participation in sports.  You may or may not end up using this information, but it's
helpful to give yourself a better understanding and viewpoints on the issue.

2. Consider the issue: Is the rule change instituted in the Ivy League enough to address
the concussion in football issue? Make sure you could briefly explain it to someone
else.
3. Identify two arguments that support the issue (Yes- the rule change is enough),
AND two arguments against the issue (No- the rule change is not enough).  These
MUST be arguments that are supported by evidence (i.e., from the video, TIME
article and your other sources, if you have them).
4. Reflect on how people from different socioeconomic status might view this issue.  In
other words, how might individuals of different socioeconomic status view the issue
of concussion risk in youth/high school/college football?  How do these perspectives
relate to the arguments given in the previous paragraph?
