Objectives and Standards
● Objective: Teachers will be able to see the value in student reflections and find
ways to practically implement them in their classes.
● ISTE Standard 3: Educator as Citizen. I inspire students to positively
contribute to and responsibly participate in the digital world.
Hook
Take 2 minutes to think and/or write a reflection on your own teaching practice from
today. What worked well? What didn’t work as well?
Reflect Engage

Provide time and structure Get students interested in

for them to reflect on what the material.
and how they learned. They
can then apply this in the
next stage of the cycle on a
deeper level.
Reflection
Process

Practice

Allow them time and

structure to practice the
skills learned in the lesson.
Metacognition
● Metacognition is the idea that students
think about their thinking
● They learn how to learn
Individual Ownership of Learning
● By thinking about their thinking, students can identify how they learn best.
Now You Try
● Think back to high school.
● What teacher did you learn the most from?
● What teacher did you not learn much from?
● How were you able to “think” in each of those classes?
The Practice of Student Reflection
● Done at end of unit
● Student choice
● Deliberate class time devoted towards it
It Takes Time…
● Students will have difficulty doing this at first
● Don’t give up! As they practice it, they will get better and find it more
meaningful.
Now You Try
● Choose a unit you are designing
● Write one question you can ask students at the end of the unit to help them
reflect
Key Takeaways
● What are key takeaways from what we have done so far?
Culminating Reflection Questions
