A SUMMARY OF THE PEOPLE "JARAI" AND " NHÀ RÔNG "

“Jarai” is an ethnic group residing in the Central Highlands of Vietnam, most of them in Gia Lai province. The " Jarai " people live in villages, in each village there is a
"Nhà Rông", where people in the region gather together on important occasions. Therefore, "Nhà Rông" belongs to the category of cultural works.
SHAPE AND STRUCTURE OF " NHÀ RÔNG " OF THE “JARAI " :

From the outside, the roof of " Nhà Rông " is designed very nicely.
The space inside the " Nhà Rông " is rectangular in shape.
The roof structure of the " Nhà Rông " is shaped by sturdy tree trunks and using thatch leaves for roofing. There are 2 high curved sides like a large sail and join together
into a narrow angle. The roof top is designed with patterned motifs, showing the unique culture of " Jarai ". The average height of the roof is 15m. The roof frame is made
up of a variety of long vertical trees.
" Nhà Rông " consists of 10-14 columns in which 8 main columns and 2-6 auxiliary columns. The stairs are shaped like gourds or gong knobs. Regardless of the shape,
the stairs have from 7 to 9 steps.
DIRECTION:

“Nhà Rông” usually turns in two directions:

+ North or South to avoid harsh sunlight and get cool wind.

+ East or West to catch the sun to help dispel odors.


MATERIAL:

“Nhà Rông” is usually built with materials such as wood and plants. Columns are large and strong wooden trunks to ensure no damage.
The “Nha Rong”’s frame is responsible for supporting the entire roof and is designed with 8 large columns. These columns are made from carved wood, sculpted with
elaborate patterns showing daily life or religious beliefs.
The wall is made of bamboo creating a vivid pattern, the main door is placed in the middle.
ROOMS :

Inside the " Nhà Rông " does not divide the room, so there is a spacious space. The capacity of the " Nhà Rông " is usually 80 to 100 people.
Both sides of the " Nhà Rông " are placed two fireplaces to facilitate the organization of festivals and heating in winter.
VALUE ON THE ARCHITECTURE AND ART OF THE "NHÀ RÔNG" :

" Nhà Rông " is a traditional cultural work, a proud symbol of the Central Highlands ethnic groups.

It has an important position in the spiritual life and is the place to organize community activities of the Central Highlands people.

In the era of modernization, " Nhà Rông " is no longer built with wood and grass materials. Instead, there are materials such as concrete, corrugated iron roof.
