Q. Question Marks CO
No.
1 a. A turbojet aircraft having a wing area of 75 m2 starts a cruise 6+4 = 10 4
at mass of 18 000 kg which includes 3500 kg of usable fuel. The
drag coefficient is given by CD = 0.025 + 0.065CL 2 and the
specific fuel consumption is 2.8 x 10-5 kg/(N-s). At constant
speed cruise condition compute the following:
i. Range
ii. Endurance
2 a. For what flight condition would you choose a sweep-back for 8+12 = 20 3
a wing, explain with justification.
b. An aircraft is equipped with a wing of symmetrical airfoils. The
lift curve slope CLα of the total aircraft is estimated to be
5.2/rad. The stall angle of attack (AOA) is 11°. Wing area is
16 m².
i. During a flight the aircraft was observed to stall at 90
km/h at sea level, compute the aircraft mass.
ii. If the lift curve slope CLα of the total aircraft is reduced
to 4.85/rad, compute the change in the aircraft mass.

3 a. Choose a location for fuel storage in an aircraft and justify your 5+6+8 = 3
choice. 20
b. List the major loads acting on a typical transport aircraft wing
and their impact on wing weight. If you are told that design of
wing structure is not feasible for the present configuration,
evaluate and suggest possible modifications
c. Consider an airplane patterned after the twin-engine
Beechcraft Queen Air executive transport. The airplane weight
is 38,220 N, wing area is 27.3 m2 , aspect ratio is 7.5, Oswald
efficiency factor is 0.9, and zero-lift drag coefficient is C D0 =
0.03. Calculate the thrust required to fly at a velocity of 350
km/h at the following conditions:
i. Standard sea level
ii. Altitude of 4.5 km.

4 a. Sketch a typical Cm Vs α plot for a stable aircraft and discuss 5+5+10 = 4

the effect of elevator deflection on it. 20
b. An aircraft of mass M=10000 kg, wing area S=40 m2 suddenly
loses engine thrust while cruising at an altitude of 10 km,
Determine the maximum range and corresponding glide angle
assuming the drag polar to be CD = 0.015 + 0.18*CL2,
c. A new design for an aircraft exhibits excessive transonic wave
drag and an unacceptably low Mcrit. Suggest any three ways to
change the design to improve these characteristics.

5 a. Explicate with sketches the effect of leading and trailing edge 5+5+5+5 =
high lift devices 20
b. Discuss importance of Centre of Gravity location with regard
to longitudinal static stability of an airplane
c. Suggest desired stability margin values for a trainer and
transport airplane
d. Discuss pros and cons of a Canard.
