Question 2: (5+5 =10 Marks)
An aircraft has mass of 50,000 kg, a wing area of 210 m2 and CL Max of 1.42. With the engines
giving a thrust of 23.4 kN it has a maximum speed of 110 m/s at an altitude where the relative
density is 0.75. Assume a drag polar CD = 0.02 + 0.05CL 2 .

a) Develop the Velocity-Load factor (V-n) diagram and mark the corner points.
b) Discuss the significance of the corner points in estimating structural loads.

Question 3: (4+6=10 Marks)

A turbojet aircraft of mass 18000 kg, wing area of 75 m2 while cruising at 10 km altitude
has all engine failure. Assuming a drag polar CD = 0.02 + 0.06CL 2 compute:
a. Maximum distance it can glide.
b. Glide velocity for maximum range.

Question 4: (5+5= 10 Marks)

Consider a generic combat aircraft of Mass = 10000 kg, Wing Area = 38m2,
Aspect Ratio = 2.0, epsilon= 0.8, CLmax = 1.7, CD0 = 0.02 and Thrust = 80 kN. Compute the
following at 3 km altitude:

a. Rate of climb at 1.3 times stall velocity.

b. Rate of climb 1.2 time minimum thrust velocity.

Question 5: (3+4+3=10 Marks)

a. Indicate the forces acting an aircraft during level turn with a neat sketch.
b. Develop equations for turn rate and radius of turn based on force balance.
c. Describe the two limiting cases of turn rates in flight.
