PART-A
1. For what type of flow is streamfunction defined? How is it defined?
2. What is a doublet? Write the expression for its streamfunction.
3. Define the terms aerodynamic centre and centre of pressure.
4. What is the effect of Reynolds number on lift characteristics of a typical
aerofoil?
5. What is Joukowski transformation? Write its one limitation.
6. What do you understand by starting vortex?
7. What is geometric and aerodynamic twist?
8. What is Kutta condition? Where is it applied?
9. Write two limitations of lifting line theory.
10. State Blasius theorem along with the type of flow when it is applicable.

PART-B
1. Consider flow over flat plate at an angle of attack 5°. Calculate the inviscid lift
coefficient and leading edge pitching moment coefficient.
2. A two-dimensional source of strength 4.0 m 2/s is placed at origin in a uniform
flow of velocity 1 m/s parallel to x-axis. What is the magnitude and direction
of velocity at r = 0.8 m and θ = 140°?
3. An airfoil generates a lift of 80 N when operating at a freestream velocity of
60 m/s. If the ambient pressure and temperature are 100 kPa and 230 K
respectively (specific gas constant is 287 J/kg-K), calculate the circulation on
the airfoil.
4. Derive an expression for lift curve slope of a finite wing having elliptic
loading distribution in terms of the lift-curve slope of its aerofoil section and
its aspect ratio.
5. There are two geometrically similar aircrafts. However, due to operational
requirements, the aircrafts have different sizes. If the surface area of the larger
aircraft is twice the smaller one and its mass is 2.4 times the smaller one, by
what percentage is the stall speed at steady level flight of the larger aircraft
greater than the smaller aircraft under same flight conditions?
6. A low speed wind tunnel has a contraction ratio of 14:1 and the test sectional
area is 1 m2. The static pressure difference between the settling chamber and
the test section is 40 cm of water column. What is the speed of air in the test
section? Assume g = 9.81 m/s2, density of air 1.2 kg/m3 and density of water
1000 kg/m3.
7. Consider a symmetric airfoil at angle of attack 4°. Calculate the moment
coefficient about the leading edge using thin airfoil theory.
8. Show that streamlines and equipotential lines are mutually orthogonal.

PART-C
1. The stream function for a cylinder in a uniform flow with circulation is given
by:

a) Derive an expression for the angular position θ of the front and rear
stagnation
points in terms of the circulation Γ and the freestream velocity U ∞.
b) If the circulation around a spinning cylinder causes the stagnation points to
be displaced by 30° downward, calculate the magnitudes of the flow
velocity at the top and bottom of the cylinder, and the corresponding
surface pressure coefficients.
2. A thin aerofoil has a circular arc camber line with a maximum camber of

a) Derive the equation for the lift coefficient Cl.
b) Calculate the magnitude of constant a, and the zero-lift angle of attack.
3. If the streamfunction for a 2D flow is given by ψ = 2xy, show that the velocity
potential exists and deduce it for this case. Calculate the velocity at the point
(3,6).
4. With the help of a neat sketch, explain the operation of a closed-circuit low
speed wind tunnel, and the function of each component.
5. Given the geometrical coordinates of an aerofoil and the distribution of
pressure and shear stress coefficients on its surface, obtain an expression for
normal and axial force coefficients on the aerofoil.

7. Enumerate the working principle of four different velocity measurement
instruments.
