Title: Introduction of sealed maintenance free battery on X/S/B series

Model(s) X/S/B/QSB6.7/QSL9 gensets

Background/Description:
The purpose of this communication is to provide an information on introduction
of sealed maintenance-free Cummins branded battery on all X/ S/B/QSB6.7/QSL9 series
gensets produced by CPGI.

Corrective Actions:

This battery is maintenance-free, pure lead-tin, valve regulated lead acid (VRLA)
design mono-block battery.
This battery does not require top-up or specific gravity check.
Added advantages of VRLA PULSE battery are:
 High cranking current capability
Ability to crank cold engines or engines kept in idle condition
Good performance at comparatively high & low temperatures
 Compact & light weight
 Faster recharge capability
 No emission of corrosive fumes
Long life both in storage & working
Battery reference part no. details as below.

Note for charging requirements:
a. Ensure the open circuit voltage (OCV) of 13.2 volts across battery terminals when
charger is in off mode; this would indicate battery is in fully charged condition.
b. If the battery is not connected to the charger and OCV of the battery drops to 12.5 volts
then the battery needs a freshening charge.
c. Protected and isolated AC supply must be provided to battery charger through a 6 amps
MCB.
d. It is the end user's responsibility to connect a suitable battery charger (output voltage of
14 volts in boost charging with max current of 6 amps & during float or trickle charging an
output of 13.2 volts) by taking an isolated and protected AC supply from a reliable power
source suitably the load side to ensure the battery Charger always get a AC power supply
irrespective of Genset is running or not.

Note for long storage precautions:

a. Avoid direct exposure to sunlight, rain, dust, etc.
b. Do not stack more than 3 batteries one above the other.
c. Check OCV of the battery every month and ensure to apply a freshening charge in case
the value drops below 12.5 volts.
d. Storage area temperature has got a effect on freshening charge frequency. See the
table below.

Storage area Freshening charge

temperature (°C) frequency.
41 to 50 01
36 to 40 02
31 to 35 03
26 to 30 04
21 to 25 05
<20 06

The battery would loose its capacity permanently if OCV check and freshening charge
procedure is not followed.

Note for parts & service:

Batteries are non serviceable items and there will not be any parts support from CPGI.
