2021-2022ABSTRACT
Electric power quality relates to non-standard voltage, current or frequency deviation that results
in failure or misoperation of end-user equipment. The power quality can affect the performance
of the electrical equipment.Generally the power quality refers to the voltage quality and the
current quality, as an end user we cannot ensure the current quality as it depends on the type of
the load connected to the system, so as to improve the overall power quality it is the need of the
hour to maintain a proper voltage quality so as to uplift the overall power quality.Eleetrie are
furnaces (EAF) are commonly used in steel industry. Unfortunately, nonlinear characteristics of
the are furnace and its stochastic behavior bring about many problems, e.g. voltage flicker and
waveform distortions. The AC furnaces are usually modelled using combined models which
divide the phenomenon taking place in real objects into a deterministic and stochastic or chaotic
parts.Modelling and simulation for various conditions is done using MATLAB/SIMULINK
environment to verify the feasiINTRODUCTION:
An electric are furnace is a furnace that heats material by means of an electric are. Electric are
furnaces are usually modelled using combined models which divide the phenomenon taking
place in real objects into a deterministic and a stochastic or chaotic parts. The development of a
realistic arc model is a demanding task because of its stochastic and nonlinear nature. The are
ignites and extinguishes in a random way especially in the beginning of the EAF work cycle. The
are voltage-current (V-I) characteristic changes during the melting process. Most of the models
worked out so far are two-step ~ they consist of a deterministic part extended further with the
help of chaotic, stochastic or modulated components. This project will discuss the electric are
furnace behaviour with the stochastic component.
LITERATURE SURVEY:
Due to the nonlinear and chaotic nature of the Electric Arc Fumace (EAFs), Voltage flicker and
harmonics are introduced in electrical networks, and these are the main disturbances associated
with power quality. Hence, for investigating flicker and harmonics introduced by the operation of
an are furnace, precise models of Electric Are Furnace (EAF) are desirable. M.A.Golkar,
M.Tavakoli Bina and S.Meschi discuss the several kinds of models of arc furnaces with dissimilar
levels of complexity are modeled and reviewed .

Study in an Electric Are Furnace Using PSCAD/EMTDC". This paper explains the current
controlled non-linear resistance model of the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF). The model derived
clearly explains the different operating stages in the Electric Are Furnace (EAF)

Model For Electric Arc Furnace” explains the different time domain models, which are explained
with precise approximations made on VI characteristics without the necessity of the initial
conditions of the EAP. This model is an efficient model with accurate results and closely resembles
the actual VI characteristics of Electric Are Furnace. And also the dynamic behavior of the EAF is
also referred from this paperOBJECTIVE:
It is hard to define the stochastic structure of EAF loads having rapid changes. For this reason, the
main issue for examining PQ problems of EAFs is modelling the electrical are.A mathematical
characteristic equation will be defined by using the data related to the electrical are current and
voltage characteristic and curve fitting methods with the help of Matlab curve fitting toolbox. Also
by using the presented model and a phase equivalent circuit model the harmonic distortions have
been compared to experimental data and the performance of the model in defining harmonic
effects has been evaluated.
IMPLEMENTATION OF WORK:
In order to define the dynamic V-I characteristic of the electrical are, a simulation model has been
developed by utilizing experimental studies and employing curve fitting methods with
MATLAB/SIMULINK.
