Note : Answer any five questions choosing one full question from each unit.

Unit - I
01 a) For the oriented graph shown in Fig. 1.a, obtain the incidence matrices  and A, basic cutset
incidence matrix (B), basic loop incidence matrix (C) and branch path incidence matrix (K).
Take the elements 5, 6, 7 as links. 10
b) Derive an expression for YBUS by singular transformation analysis. 06
c) The bus incidence matrix (A) of an oriented graph is as shown in table 1.c, obtain the oriented
graph.

02 a) Draw the representation of a typical component and their performance equation both in
impedance and admittance form. 04
b) Formulate bus admittance matrix [YBUS] by singular transformation method for the system
shown in Fig. 2.b. The values given are the admittance values of the lines in p.u. 08
c) Formulate ZBUS for the following power system network using ZBUS building algorithm. 08

Unit - II
03 a) Explain the procedure of calculation of voltage at P-Q and P - |V| buses using Gauss-Siedal
iterative method with YBUS to carryout load-flow analysis on a power system network. Draw the
flowchart also. 10
b) Explain the classification of buses in load-flow analysis. Also explain the significance of slack
bus and the purpose of conducting load-flow studies. 10

04 a) Derive the expressions for the calculation of voltage (V) and the reactive power (Q) at any bus,
during any iteration to carryout load-flow analysis. 06
b) For the power system shown in Fig. 4.b, determine the voltage at buses 2 and 3 and 4 at the end
of one iterations using Gauss-Siedal iterative technique with YBUS. The line data and bus data
are given in Tables 4.1 and 4.2.

Unit - III
05 a) Explain the procedure of conducting load-flow analysis with YBUS, using Newton-Raphson
technique for a system consisting of load buses only. Write the flowchart / algorithm. 14
b) Compare Gauss-Siedal method, N-R-technique and FDLF method of conducting load-flow
studies. 06

06 a) Explain FDLF method of conducting load-flow analysis with YBUS for a system consisting of
load buses only. Draw the flow chart / algorithm 14
b) Determine the values of x1 and x2 by N-R technique given that

07 a) Explain about performance characteristic curves of a turbo-generator boiler unit in a thermal

b) Obtain the condition for economic generation scheduling of units in a thermal plant with
transmission losses neglected. 06
c) A constant load of 300MW is supplied by two 200MW generators 1 and 2 for which the
respective incremental fuel costs are:

08 a) Derive expression for the transmission line loss in terms of generations for a system of two
generators connected to several loads through a transmission line network. State all the
assumptions made. 12
b) For the system shown in Fig. 8.b, obtain the loss coefficients assuming the currents I1 and I2 are
in phase with each other. I1 = I2 = 1.0 0° p.u., V3 = 1.0 0° p.u., Za = Zc = (0.02 + j0.08) p.u.,
Zb = (0.08 + j0.32) p.u.

09 a) With a flowchart, explain the modified Euler’s method of solving swing equation. 10
b) Explain about the representation of load and synchronous machine for transient stability studies. 10

10 a) Explain with a flowchart the numerical solution of swing equation by Runge-Kutta – IV order
method. 10
b) Explain how the network performance equations used for load-flow analysis can be applied to
describe the performance of the network during transient period. 10
