A. Identify the most appropriate average for each of the following.

1. The time it takes each student in your school to get to school from home.
- MEAN
2. The favourite television station of the first-year students in your campus.
- MODE
3. The height of the first-year students in your campus.
- MEDIAN
4. The cost of house rental in your barangay.
- MEDIAN
5. The scores in physics examination.
- MEAN
B. The nicotine contents for a random sample of 6 cigarette brands are found to be
2.3, 2.7, 2.9, 2.5, 3.1, and 1.9 milligrams. Give the mean, median, and mode.
MEAN

x=
∑x
n
2.3+2.7+2.9+ 2.5+3.1+ 1.9
x=
6
x=2.57 milligrams
Therefore, the mean of the given nicotine contents is 2.57 milligrams.
MEDIAN
Ranking the given from smallest to highest gives;
1.9, 2.3, 2.5, 2.7, 2,9, 3.1
Middle term = (6 + 1)/2 = 3.5
The two middle numbers are 2.5 and 2.7. The mean of 2.5 and 2.7 is 2.6,
therefore, the median of the given nicotine contents is 2.6
MODE
There is no mode since it doesn’t have any most frequent nicotine content
(score).
C. The average number of text messages sent in a day by a random sample of 12
students was recorded as follows: 9, 10, 6, 10, 9, 9, 8, 8, 6, 10, 6, and 11.
Determine the mean, median and mode
MEAN

x=
∑x
n
9+10+6 +10+9+ 9+ 8+8+6 +10+6+11
x=
12
x=8.5
Therefore, the mean of the given number of text messages is 8.5.
MEDIAN
Ranking the given from smallest to highest gives;
6, 6, 6, 8, 8, 9, 9, 9, 10, 10, 10, 11
Middle term = (12 + 1)/2 = 6.5
The two middle numbers are 9 and 9. The mean of 9 and 9 is 9, therefore, the
median of the given number of text messages is 9.
MODE
The most frequent scores in the given data is 6, 9, and 10.

D. Consider the scores of students in chemistry exam Score Frequency

as shown in the table below. 10 2
1. How man students took the exam? 9 5
ANS: 61 8 7
2. What is the mean? 7 10
ANS: 6.8 6 15
3. What is the median? 5 10
ANS: 6 4 6
4. What is the mode? 3 4
ANS: 6 2 2
= 61
