This learning activity sheets was designed to provide you with fun and
meaningful opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and
time. You will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while being
an active and responsive learner.
In this Learning Activity Sheet, we are going to define mean, midian and
mode of statistical data, calculate the Central Tendency of a given Grouped or
Ungrouped and demonstrate appreciation of defining mean, median and mode as
important skills needed to understand the statistical data.

Arrange the collected data values in ascending order with their corresponding
frequencies: 2 6 5 8 2 5 5 3

1. What score frequently appears?
2. What score appears to be in the middle?
3. How many students fall below the middle score?

Measures of Central Tendency
The mean (commonly called the average) of a set of n numbers is the
sum of all the numbers divided by n. The median is the middle number when
the number in a set of data is arrange in descending order. When there are
even numbers of elements, the median is the mean of two middle numbers.
The mode is the number that occurs most often in a set of data. A set of data
1
can have more than one mode. If all the numbers appear the same number of
times, there is no mode for the data set.
UNGROUPED DATA:
To find the Mean Alex adds up all the numbers, then divides by how many
numbers:
To find the Median Alex places the numbers in value order and finds
the middle number.
To find the Mode or modal value, Alex places the number in value order
then counts how many of each number. The mode is the number which
appears most often (there can be more than one mode).

62 appears three times, more often than the other values,
so, Mode = 62
GROUPED DATA:
To find the MEAN of GROUPED DATA, use the formula: x=
∑ fx
N
Where;
x = the mean
2
ΣfX = sum of the product of frequency and score; f= frequency ; x = score
N = total frequency
To apply the formula for weighted mean, we add the ‘fx’ column to the
frequency table.
3
fmc is the frequency of median class; and
i is the class interval.
The median class is the class with the smallest cumulative frequency
greater than or equal to Σ𝒇/𝟐. The computed median must be within the
median class.
4
To find the mode of grouped data, we use the formula
