Cylinder Stress Analysis Assignments

The document contains 3 assignments testing conceptual understanding of thin and thick cylinder theories. Assignment 1 calculates wall thickness of a cylinder and finds it satisfies stress limits. Assignment 2 calculates hoop, radial, and longitudinal stresses in a thick cylinder and finds they are within yield stress. Assignment 3 calculates stresses in 3 cylinders - inner, whole, and outer - and derives equations relating stress to internal pressure.

ASSIGNMENT NO.

PURPOSE
This assignment tests the conceptual understanding of the thin and thick cylinder theories

WORK PROCEDURE

Use σ = pd / 2t
250 x 106 = (60 x 105)(1.5) / 2(t)
t = 1.5 / 500
= 18mm

RESULTS
The calculations yield the wall thickness of 18mm. The thick cylinder simulation software (see next page)
shows that the stress on the extremities of the cylinder wall of 18mm is 247MN/m 2.

ANALYSIS OF RESULTS & CONCLUSIONS

The stress calculated by the thick cylinder simulation software (247MN/m 2 is less than the given limits of
250MN/m2. This means that the given pressure vessel can safely contain the pressure of 60 bars.
ASSIGNMENT NO. 2

PURPOSE
This assignment tests the conceptual understanding of

WORK PROCEDURE

Hoop Stress σc = [ Pr22 / (r12-r22) ] x [ 1 + ( r12 / r22 ) ]

= [ (120 x 0.0252 ) / (0.0452 – 0.0252)] x [ 1 + (0.0452/0.0252) ]
= 227 MN/m2

Radial Stress σr = [ Pr22 / (r12-r22) ] x [ 1 – ( r12 / r22 ) ]

= [ (120 x 0.0252 ) / (0.0452 – 0.0252)] x [ 1 – (0.0452/0.0252) ]
= – 120 MN/m2

Longitudinal Stress σL = Pr2 / (r12-r22)

= (120 x 0.0252 ) / (0.0452 – 0.0252)
= 54 MN/m2

To check if the stress is less than the yield stress

Stress = σc – σr
= 227 – (–120)
= 347 MN/m2

RESULTS
The hoop, radial and longitudinal stresses are 227, -120 and 54MN/m 2 respectively. The simulation software
also yields the same answers

ANALYSIS OF RESULTS & CONCLUSIONS

Total stresses are within the measured yield stress.
ASSIGNMENT NO. 3

PURPOSE
This assignment tests the conceptual understanding of the thin and thick cylinder theories

WORK PROCEDURE

WHOLE CYLINDER

Internal Diameter = 0.025 m

External Diameter = 0.045 m

σr = a + b/r2
– 120 = a + b/0.0252 –––––––– EQ. A

σC = a – b/r2
0 = a – b/0.0452 –––––––– EQ. B

Subtracting EQ. B from EQ. A

– 120 – 0 = [ a + b/0.0252 ] – [ a – b/0.0452 ]
– 120 = b [ 1/0.0252 – 1/0.0452 ]
– 120 = b [ 1106.17 ]
b = – 0.1084
So a = 53.53

INNER CYLINDER

Internal Diameter = 0.025 m

External Diameter = 0.035 m

σC = a – b/r2
0 = a + b/0.0252
a = b/0.0252 –––––––– EQ. C

σC = a – b/r2
–P = a – b/0.0352
–P = b/0.0252 – b/0.0352 from EQ.C
P = – 783.7 b
b = – 0.001275 P
Substituting in EQ. C
a = – 2.041 P – (0.001275 P / 0.035 2)

Now substituting value of a and b in hoop stress equation

σC = – 2.041 P – [ (0.001275 P)/0.0352 ]

σC = – 3.081 P

OUTER CYLINDER

Internal Diameter = 0.035 m

External Diameter = 0.045 m
σC = a – b/r2
0 = a – b/0.0452
a = b/0.0452 –––––––– EQ. D

σC = a – b/r2
P = a – b/0.0352
P = b/0.0452 – b/0.0352 from EQ. D
P = – 322.5 b
b = – 0.0031 P
Substituting in EQ. D
a = 0.0031 / 0.0452
= 1.53 P

Now substituting value of a and b in hoop stress equation

σC = 1.53 P – [ (0.0031P) / 0.0352 ]

σC = –1P

RESULTS
The calculations yield the wall thickness of 18mm
