At home and at school we spend a quarter of our lives and there we first learn
the lesson of self-control, truthfulness, kindness, duty and all other qualities that make
a good man or woman. The longer we live the more we realise how much we owe to
our parents and teachers. When Napolean Bonaparte had left his schoolday’s long
behind and had became the First Counsel of France, he one day visited his old school
and this is what he said to the boys: ‘Remember that every hour wasted at school
means a chance of misfortune in after life’. What he meant was that there are certain
opportunities for building up character which only come to us in the first fourteen or
fifteen years of our lives and never afterwards.
