Reflection: Ronald Allan Kelley Poe, known professionally as Fernando Poe Jr.

Our family bonding is usually spent by watching movies together. My father is a Bisaya, fond of action
movies, and one of the people he looks up to is Fernando Poe Jr. So, we often watch Poe's screenplays. Since my
father is the one who decides what we will watch, I have almost seen all his works. I always wonder why his name
does not appear just once. His name is often displayed as the producer, director, and starring. It made me curious
intrigued. Thus, I asked my father why. I was flabbergasted by his answer. That day, I learned that he also produced
and directed nearly all his flicks. I was amazed by Poe's talents, skills, and abilities. No wonder he was named "Da
King" or the "Action King of Philippine Movies."

Fernando Poe Jr.'s works are classified into two categories. These are the Westerns from the 1960s
through the 1970s and cop stories since then. The fantasies, costume-and-sword epics, and comedies fill in the
gaps. His police plays were witty and sharp, and the violence was almost joyously carnage. The 1960s generation
idolized Poe's gloomy, austere, introspective gunslinger galloping over the broad plains. It was not surprising that
my father is one who was obsessed with his films.

Poe's image in his crafts was a brave person with a cool and calm demeanor through the years. He never
depicted a furious face nor raised his voice despite creating action films. Instead, his eyes mirror his feelings and
reactions. He never let anyone be hurt and violated. Though he is gifted with skills and strength, he only uses them
to protect and serve the people he loves. The films also presented his nationalistic side; he defended the land
where he is originated. In my opinion, he is the delineation of a Filipino superhero, and that's what makes him
influential. It justifies that he is deserving to receive the National Artist Award given by President Aquino.

Poe made significant contributions to the development of Philippine films. He had a significant impact on
the Filipino masa, his major audience, who finds his work approachable, relevant to their everyday issues,
motivating, and uplifting. Poe was a tremendous example to Filipinos for being a modest, kind, and compassionate
man both on and off the television. His legendary movie roles in over a hundred films where he appeared and
directed inspired a generation of television and movie impersonators. One of them is the Kapamilya primetime
series adaptation "Ang Probinsyano" starred by Coco Martine. And honestly speaking, he was the reason I was
indulged in acting and once dreamt of being an action star.
