PROJECT COCO PEAT
ENACTUS MLDCC
We found that the pandemic has created a new
generation of enthusiasts who have taken a liking
towards home gardening and have started growing
fruits and vegetables at home. The Team at Enactus
MLDCC wanted to encourage them, and hence we
came up with the project idea of Coco Peat.
The main aim was to find a more sustainable and eco-
friendly solution for the growth of plants, and keeping
this in mind we came up with the idea of cocopeat. We
also wanted to reduce the overuse of chemical
fertilizers and make people aware of cocopeat, a
sustainable and environmentally friendly fertilizer.
In the report further, we have explained our ideation
process, the benefits of our project, and our future
plans.
INTRODUCTION
Coir pith or cocopeat is a biomass material obtained
during the extraction of husk fiber through coconut
husk. Its primary function is to act as a supplement to
the soil. Cocopeat not only enhances the efficiency of
soil due to the presence of natural fiber and nutrients in
it but also has an excellent moisture retention capacity.
Which in turn leads to the healthy growth of plants and
reduces overuse of artificial fertilizers.
IDEATION PROCESS (NOV 2021)
After understanding the demand of gardening during
the pandemic we decided to come up with a natural
supplement to grow healthy plants.
This is when we came up with the idea of making
cocopeat.
RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT (DEC 2020 - MAY
2021)
During this time we did our research and got to know
more about the benefits of cocopeat such as :
It is durable and eco-friendly in nature
It as great water holding capacity which makes it
an excellent growing medium for plants.
It is antifungal properties. It is also resistant to
mold, which in turn will help protect plants from
disease and decay as they grow.
It increases the porosity of the potting mix, which
helps better root growth which then results in
better plant growth and higher yield.

In the initial years, we plan to target an audience of
nurseries and home gardeners.
However, in the near future, we wish to target a larger
audience base. Once we’re in the maturity stage of
our project, we plan to start working on the plant
starter kits which will include all the things needed
from germination to fertilizers.
SDGS FULFILLLED
Cocopeat strives to be a household product that
allows people to eat more organic,boosting their
immunity and leading to a healthier lifestyle.
It aims to avoid additional soil degradation, to reduce
the use of soil and to some extent even nourish the
soil
It is a very sustainable option that will help to reduce
our dependence on natural resources and enables
ethical agri-product manufacturing.
Cocopeat encourages the use of natural fertilizers
instead of chemical fertilizers.
We seek to minimize waste by transforming 'this
perceived' waste into a gift that keeps on giving with
Cocopeat. As a result, the environment will be more
sustainable, and the community will be healthier and
more active.
With our project, we seek to contribute to the People, The
Planet, and Prosperity.
This project plans to help out the underprivileged by
providing them employment and boost the health of
people by motivating them to grow organic
vegetables and fruits in the solace of their homes.
We plan to reduce coconut waste, reduce the use of
soil by 40% and encourage people to use natural
fertilizer.
After incurring loss for the initial months, by the 6th
-8th months we are able to see positive figures in the
surplus amounts for the first year 2021-22.
In conclusion, with this project, we want to not only
encourage home gardeners but also provide a viable eco-
friendly alternative to grow healthy plants, and at the same
time increase awareness about cocopeat via Project
Cocopeat.
